Part A

Que1: Discuss the role of PSTN in sustaining the communication over a relatively small area. Also
illustrate with help of diagrams how PSTN are connected to other networks, which allows capabilities of
PSTN to be used over inter-continental ranges.

Que2: Suggest the best possible mode of obtaining internet for following scenarios.

a) User at home or in small business.

b) Distributed community of users around a single site or campus.
c) Distributed set of users all attached to the same enterprise-wide private network. Why the
latter is sometimes called an intranet.

Que3: Suggest an example of a network working in packet mode. Hence, suggest its advantages.

Part B

Que4: Differentiate between channel bandwidth and signal bandwidth. Construct an example and
illustrate which is more important to consider in designing a communication network.

Que5: Write down some of the common aspect ratio’s widely used today. Also illustrate how resolution
and screen size is related to Aspect ratio. Suggest how you will change the aspect ratio in a typical video
player – like VLC or KMPlayer etc.

Que6: The following character string is to be transmitted using Huffman coding:

1) Derive the Huffman code tree.

2) Determine the savings in transmission bandwidth over normal ASCII and binary coding.
