Employing ISO standard tests ( Table 2), visual inspection

One of the problems in manufacturing silver jewellery is fire scale or, as it is sometimes known fire stain. This is a
red stain that one can observe when silver alloys, containing, is subject to any high temperature process. High cop-
per content aggravates porosity issues during casting of silver. Noble SIlver has lower copper content than available
alloys, as shown in Table 1.

Fire stain: Polished samples are placed in a furnace with a temperature of 580 deg celsius, for 1 hour in an oxygen atmos-
phere,followed by dipping in Sulphuric Acid ( 10% conc) at 70 deg celsius for 4 minutes before rinsing. Samples are then
cut and prepared according to SN: EN ISO 1463: 2003 “Measurements of coating thickness-microscopically method, to de-
termine the minimum depths and maximum attacks by oxidation.
