    Sotheby’s London February 2011 Contemporary Art Day Auction today brought a total of £13,930,200 ($22,523,740 / €16,546,244), nearly surpassing the pre-sale top estimate (est. £9,881,000-13,932,000 / $15,976,589-22,526,651 / €11,797,893-16,634,779). The auction also established strong sell-through rates of 82.5% by lot and 85.7% by value. The highest price paid in today’s sale was for Gerhard Richter’s 1992 oil on canvas Abstraktes Bild (767-1), which measures 62x62cm. The work sold for £589,250 ($952,758 / €699,909), in excess of its pre-sale high estimate (£250,000-350,000 / €292,000-408,000 / $387,000-545,000), which follows on from the remarkable sum of £7.2million* achieved for an abstract artwork by the artist in yesterday’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction - the top lot of that sale too. Today’s results bring the overall total for Contemporary Art sold at Sotheby’s this season to £101,952,750 ($161,252,099 / €121011773), well above pre-sale expectations for the Contemporary Art Auction Series this season of £56-78million. The total achieved also represents the second-highest total for a February Contemporary Art Sales Series in London and the highest total for a Contemporary Art Sales Series in London since July 2008.
