OSH Perception of Employees and Employers

Both employers and employees place a reasonable priority on OSH in the workplace.
However survey showed that it is not a ‘top of the mind’ issue for many employers and
employees. Besides, some of employers and employees underestimate the existing dangers in
their workplaces. According to WorkSafe definitions of risk level, 37.3 per cent of workplaces
operate in low risk environments, while 61.5 per cent of employers report that they perceive their
workplaces to be low risk. However, in relation to raising OSH issues in the workplace, most
employees and employers are performing better in terms of OSH knowledge, with the most
dangerous industries such as manufacturing, transport and storage, health and community
services and construction showing higher levels of awareness, demonstrating that the work safe
message is being heard. Employers understand that applying OSH management itself will give
long term financial and cultural benefits for them. Employers know that they can achieve
reduction in workplace costs resulting from a decrease in absenteeism, worker compensation,
staff turnover, workplace accidents and injury and job stress. Besides, employees also have
realized the importance of the OSH and increased the awareness of the risk and hazard in their
workplace. Furthermore, they realized that the aims of the OSH will bring them to healthier
lifestyle options and promotes work-life balance. Employees also know that applying the OSH
management also benefit for their family so that they can working safely and come home safe.
