Limitations on the Rights of Blacks
 Black Codes were created after the Civil War
to limit the rights of African Americans.
Blacks could not intermarry, own weapons or
gather together after sundown. Black could not
vote.
Limitations on the Rights of Blacks
 Jim Crow Laws were also set up to limit the rights
of African Americans. These laws were passed as a
result of Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), which set up the
“separate but equal doctrine”. These laws set up
separate facilities for both blacks and whites. These
laws extended from the late 1800s to the 1960s.
 Jim Crow laws kept blacks from voting. Poll taxes
said a person had to pay a tax before voting. Some
states made voters pass literacy test. These laws kept
many poor uneducated blacks voting.
