Nevertheless, the importan e of who the Comte actually is, is hinted at and without saying more, it is F ancis Bacon. As he rode westward to Germany-he is identified in the pain ing by Rembrandt at the beginning of the text as the" Pol ish Rider." Because Rosicrucians and as the "I AM" Activity or embers of certain spiritual organizations, such aint Germain Foundation, believe that Francis
Bacon wrote the Shakespe rean Plays, it is thought that, as the Comte De Gabalis, he wrote the five iscourses in the form of a dialogue in which he himself is both teache rand tudent." (Quote from wikipedia.org) About the Author Abbe de Villars (1635 - 167 "The unseen entities said t inhabit the four elements; they are composed of the finest essence of ea h element. The creatures of the air are called sylphs; of the earth, gnome; of fire, salamanders; and of water, nymphs or undines. The Abbe de Villa s (1635-ca. 1673) is often cited as an authority on the subject, since he (1670), from which a good ublished a treatise entitled Comte de Gabalis eal of what follows is drawn."

cross the title page of the first edition of Comte de Gabalis, published at Pa is in the year 1670, runs the cryptic phrase from Tertu Ilia n "Quo ta nto im pend io abscond itu retia m solu mmodo demonstra re destruere est," [ When a th ing is hidde n away with so much pains merely to reveal is to destroy it,] suggesting to the mind that there is a concealed myste . Hungry souls, heeding these words, have sought and fou nd beneath th esprit and spa rkle of its pages a clue to that truth which all the world is s eking. Many readers will recall Sir Edward Lytton's citation of Comte de Gabalis in
his strange novel Zano i, certain portions of which were based upon this source. And others wil remember the high esteem in which the wit and wisdom of the Abbe d Villars' masterpiece were held by litterateurs, as we II as occu Itists, in th ea rly yea rs of the 18th centu ry. Alexa nde r Pope, in his dedication to the R pe of the Lock, the first draft of which was written in 1711, says "The Ros crucians are a people I must bring you acquainted with. The best account I know of them is in a French book call'd Le Comte de Gabalis, which both in its title and size is so like a Novel, that many of the Fair Sex have read i for one by mistake. According to these Gentlemen, the four Elements are i habited by Spirits, which they call Sylphs, Gnomes, Nymphs, and Salaman ers. The Gnomes or Demons of Earth delight in mischief; but the Sylp s, whose habitation is in the Air, are the bestcondition'd Creatures i aginable. For they say, any mortals may enjoy the most intimate familiari ies with these gentle Spirits, upon a condition very easy to aII true Adepts, n inviolate preservation of Chastity." day, be as humble serva nts of that great idea I to wh ic he ded icated himself, and which he set forth in a life of action and nobl endurance. N. de Montfaucon de Villars was born in the diocese of Alet, n ar Toulouse, in the year 1635. He was a member of the very ancient famil of the CanillacVillars, being a grandson of Jean Fran~ois de Montfaucon de Roquetaillade Canillac-Villars, and a nephew of the celebrated and lear ed Benedictine father, Bernard de Montfaucon of Saint Maur.
EFOREthe Abbe de Villars met the Comte, he had been prepared for a work which has insured him the gratitude and rev renee of those seekers for truth who have followed in his footste s. May we, to-
Having taken orders, he came to Paris in the year 1667 wi h the intention of advancing himself through preaching, and fired with that enthusiasm which the country brings to the city, hoped for a brilliant ca eer. The Abbe's wit, eloquence, and quiet demeanour charmed all with whom he was brought into contact, and he soon gained many illustriou friends, entre into the most exclusive circles, won the esteem of Madame de Sevigne, and became the centre of a coterie of beaux esprits who wer in the habit of meeting at the Porte Riche lie u. He awa kened a desi re for tr th in the jaded though brilliant minds of that effete period, and sought to urn them from their chief consideration, the degradation of the times, by ointing out the possibility of regeneration, doing much to elevate the tho ghts of all who ca me under the sway of his gentle and persuasive influence The Abbe de Villars was an earnest worker for the caus of liberty and religious tolerance, and the author of several books and p mphlets, some of which remain to be discovered. One of these, on the 0 igin of species, inspired Jea n-Baptiste Lama rck, whose writings stim ulate Darwin in his quest, and who was the real father of the modern doctrine of biological evolution. Few of the works to-day attributed to the Abbe ere written by him. They are forgeries contrived, as are the sequels and i the later editions of Comte de Gabalis itself, by those sought to nullify the profou nd infl uence wh ich th is book ex minds and imaginations of its readers.
