About the case
By the late 1990s, the top management at Whirlpool corporation found itself
unable to drive growth in its business. The revenue, profit, and market share
were stagnant. Whirlpool had adopted various operational initiative to cut cost
and achieve economies of scale in its operation. David R. Whitwan was CEO of
Whirlpool corporation.

Company faced some problem such as reduce the market share, price
competition, rising material cost, declining demand, price of major product were
declining at an average rate f 3.4 % per annum. Whitwan realize such problem
and he want to make innovative product. The management also looked at price
as the only way to differentiate its product. The focus of the research and
engineering technician at Whirlpool was on lowering costs and improving
performance through minor product enhancement. Whitwam wanr to all
employee to be creative. In 1999, he started the innovation initiative by inviting
idea from all the employee.

The management at Whirlpool ultimately found a soul mate in the form of


strategos to further its democratic innovation agenda. In 2000, consultant from
strategos trained 75 employee- core group brought together from Whirlpool’s
global operation. The member of the core group were relieved from all other
duties. The consultant sought to break the barrier of orthodoxy and train the
people on how to “ideate” . think differently, explore for new idea and then use
their new perspective to generate new idea and enhance existing ideaand
concepts.

Strategos helped whirlpool to put the necessary infrastructure I place and to use
IT to facilitate the objective and IT used to improve and accelerate the innovation
chain from idea to final product. The employee also enthusiastic about the
various innovation initiative.
