SOLICITATION LETTER TO MISSIONS THAT HAVE NOT EVER CONTRIBUTED

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Dag Hammarskjöld Scholarship Fund, I invite you to
join the many other Missions of the United Nations that endorse and support our fFellowship
pProgram for jJournalists.

The Fund was established in 1961 by UN journalists to honor the second Secretary General
through its Fellowship Program for Journalists. Mid-career journalists from the developing
countries of Africa, Asia and South America apply for j Journalism fFellowships in order to come
to New York during the first ten weeks of the General Assembly. The pProgram thus provides a
unique opportunity for the selected journalists to report on United Nations deliberations to the
audiences in their native countries and to expand their knowledge of foreign policy and
diplomacy.

Fellowship expenses can average $30-40,000 for each journalist, including ever-increasing travel,
medical insurance, housing, and per diem. Because the project is sponsored by journalists and
not UN- funded, [CAN WE SAY SOMETHING LIKE THIS: Because the Fund is not UN-related
organization,] we rely solely on grants and contributions from mMissions of the United Nations
and other private sources to conduct the fFellowship pProgram each year. Therefore,
Ambassador __________, we trust that the Mission of __________ will help to sustain the
Fellowship Program for Journalists by making a financial contribution.

The Fund has received more than ____ applications from print, radio, television and web
journalists in _____ developing nations this year. UN-accredited journalists, including members
of the Fund Board of Directors, volunteer their services to review each application. We will
announce our selections of the four winners in June.Due to limited financial resources we can
select only four (4) Dag Hammarskjöld Journalism Fellows from the many talented journalists who
apply. We will announce our selections in June.
