Instruction for Q. Nos. 1 to 10 :

Read the paragraph carefully and answer the questions below it.

Traditional Indian society was essentially rigid and superstitious. It was a society with every inflexible customs,
rituals and manners. As a result it did not develop and grow. In due course, many inhuman social and religious
these customs and superstitions grew. Invariably the victims of these customs and practice were the weak and
unprotected members of the community – children, women and people belonging to low castes and of course the
poor. Sati i.e. the rite or the practice of burning off a window on the funeral pyre of her husband was one such
custom, which began to be practiced in the name of region.
Sati had its origin in the dark ages of medieval India and was in vogue during the occupation of the sub-continent
by the British. However, in some of the less developed parts of the country, this crime is still committed and even

Most of us use the products of science - railways, aeroplanes, electricity, wireless and thousands of others -
without thinking how they came into existence. We take them for granted, as if we were entitled to them as a matter
of right. We are very proud of the fact that we live in an advanced age and are ourselves very advanced. Now, there
is no doubt that our age is very different from previous ages and I think it is perfectly correct to say that it is far
more advanced. But it is a different thing from saying that we, as individuals or groups, are more advanced. It
would be the height of absurdity to say that because an engine driver can run an engine and Plato or Socrates
could not, the engine driver is more advanced than, or is superior to, Plato or Socrates. But it would be perfectly
correct to say that the engine itself is a more advanced method of locomation than Plato's chariot was.
