Pump System Pump System System System
The BRAVO Blowout North Sea 1977
Primary Equipment for Oil Recovery

1. An oil containment boom with handling and

cleaning equipment
2. An efficient skimming unit with handling
equipment and aggregates
3. Storage availability for recovered oil
4. Cargo Heater
5. Transfer systems (pumps, hoses, valves)
STATUS OF THE
TRANSREC SYSTEM
The TransRec is designed for:
• Oil recovery in heavy sea
• Transfer of recovered oil in open seas
• Emergency off loading of grounded vessels
• Coast /beach line clean up
• Off loading of sunken vessels
• To be operated by one person
• Designed for 24 hours operation
TransRec Umbilical
Weir skimmerhead features
• Center buoyancy
• Automatic skirt
• More compact design
• Reduced transit draft
• Self priming
• Water cut measurement
• Emulsion thickness measurement
• (Capacity measurement)
• Only pump pressure regulated

• If we can ”see” and measure what we are doing

during operation, we may increase the overall
efficiency by a factor of 2

To operate ”blindfolded”, the equipment should have:

oil thickness meter in the oil boom
oil/water phase meter in discharge line
oil slick positions from surveillance helicopter
Pt. 5 Ch 7 Section 12
– Recovered Oil Reception and Transportation
• B 104 The oil tanks and deck area, from where the operation is performed, are to be as far away
from the accommodation as possible
• C 101 The following spaces are to be considered as gas dangerous spaces during oil recovery
operations:
Tanks for storage of recovered oil
Enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces in which pipe flanges, valves, hoses, pumps and/or other
equipment for handling of recovered oil are located
• C 103 Gas- dangerous zones are:
Zones on the open deck or semi-enclosed spaces on the deck within a distance of 3 m from oil
skimmer equipment, hoses and valves used for recovered oil handling, openings and air pipes
from tanks for recovered oil and openings and ventilation outlets from gas-dangerous spaces
• D 101 The vessel is to be arranged and equipped so as to minimize the time needed to make it
operational. This implies that systems and equipment for handling of recovered oil as far as
practicable are to be permanently installed
• D 103 All electrical and mechanical equipment for use in gas-dangerous areas during oil
recovery operations is to be certified for operation in gas contaminated atmosphere
• D404 The filling line is to be provided with means for injection of emulsion-breaking chemicals.
The arrangement is to be so as to facilitate efficient mixing with recovered oil, e.g. By injection to
the suction side of a pump. For tanks provided with heating coils the requirements may be
dispensed with.

Weir skimmer is the simplest and most compact skimmer design

with a high performance.
This should be used if possible.

-High capacity
-Limited water content
-Efficient up to 10.000 cSt.

Oil property

- Bunker fuels for commercial vessels will normally; HFO 380

- Some refineries will also export HFO with higher viscosities; HFO 680

Oil property

When these bunker fuels form an emulsion,

we will experience the extreme viscosities
Weathering of HFO 680
Oil property

- Crude oils may change into high viscous oils as the oil ”weathers”
and start to form an emulsion. Lighter fractions of crudes evaporate
- Weathering test of relevant crude oils should be performed

Driverless offloading of sunken vessels

Why do we need to empty sunken vessels?

• Oil will come to the surface sooner or later
• We must not leave the environment polluted
• It is possible to cleanup after our mistakes
• It is a question of attitude and priorities
How do we do this

• We will use the same tool, TransRec, as for

the emergency offloading and oil skimming
operation
• The umbilical will be connected to a ROLS
unit, which will cut hole in the vessels tank
and discharge the oil to the surface vessel
• The ROLS may also be used for injection of
compressed air into tanks and for steam
injection as well (heating)
Our target is to empty oil from sunken
vessels in a safe and cost effective
solution

1. Survey of wreck 4. Technical

2. Identify the potential challenges
3. For pollution conclusion
4. Plan the discharging 5. Safety during
of oil operation
6. Cost of operation
Survey of wreck
• Identify damage of wreck
• How many tanks that may contain oil
• How to attack the tanks, plan of the
wreck
• Meassure the thickness of the hull
plates
Identify the volume of oil in the tanks

• Measure difference in
pressure in tanks
Poil • Take oil samples of oil
H
• Identify specific gravity

Dispersant

• This is for cleanup of small oil slicks drifting

towards sensitive areas
• Limitations
• This is only effective within the first 24 to 48
hours
• The emulsion will become too viscous for the
dispersant to mix

Conclusion
• Technology today can recover oil from sea
surface as long as there is oil on the sea
surface, independent of weather and waves
• Skimmer tools are available for all
viscosities
• All functions should be remotely -
Safety on deck, no people on deck
Conclusion

Cost in US$/ton
• Emergency transfer 20 - 200

• Oil skimming from sea 40 - 400

• Dispersant 400 - 500

• Offloading of sunken vessel 500 - 1000

• Cleaning of beaches 3000 - 6000
