SOCIALIST PARTY OF ONTARIO FOUNDING CONVENTION

TORONTO, ON, MARCH 31, 2011: On May 28th, 2011, the newly constituted
Socialist Party of Ontario (SPO) will be holding its founding convention
at the Bond Place Hotel, 65 Dundas St. E, Toronto.

The SPO was founded by political activists concerned about the absence of
a provincial political party that presented a platform to counter the
existing economic framework that has produced deficits, cuts in services
for the general population and made economic insecurity a fact of life for
the majority of Ontarians.

The activists believe that a party committed to countering this economic

agenda must also reexamine traditional notions of how political parties
themselves are organized, and should seek to avoid top-down, hierarchical
based leadership. Acting Spokesperson, Michael Laxer, “As a former
candidate and organizer for the NDP, I know the time has come for a new
party on the left; a party that will truly oppose the neo-liberal economic
consensus.”
The convention at the end of May will be the first step in attempting to
bring these issues into the public forum in Ontario.
