The National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development
(NIESBUD) was established in 1983 by the ministry of industry(now ministry
of small scale industries), Govt of India, as an apex body for coordinating
and overseeing the activities of various institutions/agencies engaged in
entrepreneurship development particularly in the area of small industry and
small business.

NIESBUD was registered as a society under the government of Indian


societies Registration Act, xx1 of1860 .It started up its functioning from 6th
July 1983, it was established by the government of India as an apex body
for coordinating and overseeing the activities of various institutions and
agencies engaged in entrepreneurship development, it was mainly in the
areas of small industry and small business.

The policy, direction and guidance to the Institute is provided by its


Governing Council whose Chairman is the Minister of SSI. The Executive
Committee consisting of Secretary ( Small Scale Industry & ARI ) as its
Chairman and Executive Director of the Institute as its Member Secretary
executes the policies and Decisions of the Governing Council through its
whole-time Executive Director.

development since 1983" To evolve standardized materials and processes for
selection, training, support and sustenance of entrepreneurs, potential and
existing.

To support and affiliate institutions in carrying out training and other


entrepreneurship development related activities. To serve as an apex
national level resource institute of entrepreneurship development ensuring
its impact across the country and among all strata of the society.

To provide vital information and support to trainers, promoters and


entrepreneurs relevant to entrepreneurship development To train trainers,
promoters and consultants in various areas of entrepreneurship
development.

(NIESBUD) provide vital information and support to trainers, promoters and
entrepreneurs by organising research and documentation relevant to
entrepreneurship development. It offer consultancy nationally,
internationally for promotion of entrepreneurship and small business
development.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) account for over 95% of enterprises
and 60%-70% of employment, and generate a large share of new jobs in
OECD economies. SMEs play a vital role for the growth of Indian economy by
contributing 45% of industrial output, 40% of exports, employing 60 million
people, create 1.3 million jobs every year and produce more than 8000
quality products for the Indian and international markets.

SME's Contribution towards GDP in 2009 was 17% which is expected to


increase to 22% by 2012. There are 26.1 million MSME Units in India and 12
million persons are expected to join the workforce in the next 3 years. SMEs
are the fountain head of several innovations in manufacturing and service
sectors, the major link in the supply chain to corporate and the PSUs. By
promoting SMEs, the rural areas of India will be developed.

NIESBUD mission is to Promote, Support and Sustain Entrepreneurship and


Small Business through Training, Education, Research, Consultancy and
other interventions throughout the Globe.

In order to attain its objectives NIESBUD carries out a wide range of


activities such as the following.

Xc Evolving effective training strategies and methodology

Xc Standardizing model syllabus for training various target groups.

Xc ‘ormulating scientific selection procedures.

Xc Developing training aids, manuals, and tools.

Xc ‘acilitating and supporting Central/state/other agencies in executing


entrepreneurship development programmes.

Xc Conducting such programmes for promoters, trainers, and


entrepreneurs who are not undertaken by other agencies.

Xc Maximizing benefits and accelerating the process of entrepreneurship


development.

Xc Organizing all those activities that help develop entrepreneurial culture


in the society.
NIESBUD also serves as the secretariat for National Entrepreneurship
development Board(NEDB) ,the apex body which determines policy for
entrepreneurship development in the country. The institute, therefore,
performs the task of processing the recommendations made by the Board.

c To hold examinations and test and confer certificates and diplomas on


the trainers as well as trainees.

c To undertake documentations and tests and research in the field of


entrepreneurship and small business development.

c To conduct work-shops, seminars and conferences etc for promotion


and development of entrepreneurship in small scale industries and
small business.
c To provide a forum for interaction and exchange of view with agencies
engaged in various aspects of entrepreneurship in small.

c To assist in setting up of a regional and state level training institutes


for entrepreneurship and small business development.

Many of India's leaders have perceived the need to shift some of these
barriers to the development of entrepreneurship in their country, and a
number of programs have emerged to meet this need. Various agencies
participate in entrepreneurial development across India.

To coordinate and oversee their activities, the Ministry of Industry


established the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business
Development (NIESBUD). The institute organizes entrepreneurship
development programs, prepares manuals, and produces educational videos;
its training activities are restricted to stimulating, supporting, and sustaining
entrepreneurship. A sample program is entitled "Training Trainers for
Barefoot Managers.
