1.

Answer any five of the following:- [20]

a) Compare SI and CI engine with respect to:-
(i) Compression ratio ii)Speed iii)Efficiency iv)Weight
b) Explain exhaust blowdown loss and pumping loss.
c) Explain why a simple carburettor cannot meet the various engine requirements.
d) Compare phenomenon of knock in SI and CI engine.
e) Justify the statement ‘SI engine is called quantity governed engine and CI engine is called quality
governed engine.’
f) Explain how supercharging helps to improve the power output.

2. a) Draw and discuss the difference between ideal and actual valve timing diagram of four stroke SI engine
with reason. [8]
b) What is nozzle lip and why is it provided? The venturi of a simple carburettor has a throat diameter of 15
mm and the co-efficient of air flow is 0∙80. The fuel orifice has a diameter of 1.35 mm and the coefficient of
fuel flow is 0∙68. The petrol surface is 5 mm below the throat. Neglect compressibility and find: [12]
i. Air-fuel ratio for pressure drop of 0∙06 bar when the nozzle lip is neglected.
ii. Air-fuel ratio when the nozzle lip is taken into account.
iii. The minimum velocity of air required to start the fuel flow when nozzle lip is provided density of air as 1.2
kg/m3 and for fuel 750 kg/m .

3. Write short notes on any four:- [20]

i.EGR ii. Stratified charge engine iii. EURO norms iv.Forced circulation cooling system v.Rating of fuel
