Algebra 2 8.

3 Name:__________

A circle is the set of all points in a plane that are equidistant from a given
point called the center. Any segment with endpoints of the center and a
point on the circle is a radius of the circle.

The distance between any point (x, y) on the circle and the center (h, k) is
the radius r. Use the distance formula d = ( x 2 −x1 ) 2 +( y 2 − y1 ) 2 to find the
equation of a circle. The equation of a circle is (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2.

Example 1: The plan for a park puts the center of a circular pond, of radius
0.6 miles, 2.5 miles east and 3.8 miles south of the park headquarters. Write
an equation to represent the border of the pond, using the headquarters as
the origin.

Example 2: Write an equation for a circle if the endpoints of a diameter are

at (2,8) and (2,-2).

Example 3: Write an equation for a circle with a center at (3,5) that is

tangent to the y – axis.

Example 4: Find the center and radius of the circle with equation x2 + y2 =
16. Then graph the circle.

Example: Find the center and radius of the circle with equation x2 + y2 + x
– 4y – 93.75 = 0. Then graph the circle.

Complete the square.

X2 + y2 + x – 4y – 93.75 = 0
X2 + x + _ + y2 – 4y + _ = 93.75 + _ + _
X2 + x + 0.25 + y2 – 4y + 4 = 93.75 + 0.25 + 4
(x + 0.5)2 + (y – 2)2 = 98

The center of the circle is at (–0.5, 2),and the radius is 7 2 . Locate the
center and then find several points located about 9.9 units from the center.
Draw the circle that passes through them.

Example 5: Find the center and radius of the circle with equation x2 + y2 +
6x – 7 =0. Then graph the circle.
