Why was Europe not enthusiastic about the coming
of Sound? Musique concrete - (1947) “Music” from sounds that exist, rather than from what is written down and played with musical instruments. The goal of sound in film is “...to reassociate those sounds with images of objects or situations that were different... than the objects or situations that gave birth to the sounds in the first place.”

Readings review: Murch & Chion The “shadow” finally dances free.... Think of an object, and it’s “shadow” being its sound. Synchresis: Once it has danced free, sound can re-attach itself (ax chopping wood = bat striking ball)

Wednesday, May 4, 2011 The Musical! Music and dance intregral to the story--function to advance the plot (or, are the plot!). Westside Story (1961) won 10 Oscars. Seems hokey now, but was groundbreaking because it was shot on location, dealt with urban issues, immigration, street gangs, etc. There is no real difference between Westside Story and the Radiohead music video...
