The course is designed to provide an introductory overview of various aspects of

RFID tags and systems. Fundamental aspects of link budget and backscattering
characteristics of RFID tags will be reviewed, as will be the problem of RF matching
from ASIC to antenna. The design of platform-tolerant tags will be addressed and the
problem of computer-aided design of antennas and tags for RFID application will be
discussed. A list of topics to be covered is given below:

1. Basic RFID link budget calculations and backscattering fundamentals

2. RF front end considerations of ASIC.
3. RF matching from ASIC to antenna
4. Complete design, simulation and test of RFID tag, including antenna,
ASIC and application examples
5. Near-field antenna considerations for RFID tags
6. Platform-tolerant tag designs using EBG and metamaterials
