Creative Thinking and Natural/Mental Orders Worksheet

Part 1:

Creative Thinking
Construct as many metaphors as you can about five different things that describe any aspect of
your life, such as someone you know, something you do, some place you have been, or anything
else. Refer to Activity 7.1, located in Ch. 7 of Thinking, for examples on how to create metaphors.

Metaphor: A mountain in the mist; Strong and everlasting; A blanket of safety and comfort.

Sailing:

wind, water and sun.
Camping:
Sleeping under the stars; with the ground as my pillow and the sky as my blanket;
sleeping with Mother Nature; communing with nature; nestled in the grass; without a pot
to piss in or window to throw it out of.
Bicycling:
Peddling the streets; Flying the wheels; chasing the breeze; As Passenger and
Engine.

Part 2:

Natural/Mental Orders
Organize two sets of information using natural and mental orders. Refer to the “Natural/Mental
Orders” section in Ch. 8 of Thinking for additional guidance.
Example:
Type of Organization: Natural Order: Chronological
Example: Seeds grow into plants, flower or fruit, produce more seeds, fall to the ground,
take root, and produce another plant

Mental Order: Proprietary Order; The order in which an individual or an organization
orders items by policy.
You must arrive at the office at 8am and sign in. Then you must fill out generic form.
Then you must wait for your turn. You must provide all necessary documents. Then you
must wait for a call back for an appointment after reviewing documents and form. Then
you must go to appointment. Then you must answer questions about documents. Then
you must be assigned a workshop. Then you must submit test at workshop. Then you will
be sent either an approval or denial letter.

Natural Order: Disaster Recovery; the order in which businesses must take in order to
recover from a disaster.
You must plan for an inevitable disaster. You must plan for the safety of your employees
during a disaster. You must make sure that all expensive items and property are insured.
You must make sure all important documents are copied in a secure location. You must
plan for the lack of water and electricity and other services or facilities for employees and
any absences in order to continue business.
Disaster strikes. Your plan for safety and recovery are put to the test. Safely put into
place post disaster business continuation procedures. Review Recovery process and
append as necessary.
