Factors influencing park planning and design

Harare Gardens has been the focus of many socio cultural activities over the years.
Events such as the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) and the Harare
International Book Fair seem to have found a home in the place.

Theatre has also taken the park by storm and the area close adjacent to the National
Gallery has become the …. For many shows, dubbed “theatre in the park” held in the
evenings. The place now boosts two swimming pools, one … size and the other a smaller
one for …. Purposes. A number of performance areas, restaurants, children’s crèche and
play ground a art gallery equipped into a library, sculpture …., restaurant, lawn bowling
as well as a car park.

Mythology
Areas of planned intervention will include the temporary performance area described
earlier, A small pond which dried up located @ near the entrance along Leopold
Takawira Avenue, the area around the artificial pond close to the park lane entrance as
well as the cenotaph. Other than that other smaller interventions will take place that will
generally improve the visitors perception of the space. These will be onthined in the final
document, but a number of them will deal with issues discussed earlier. The type of
intervention planned is a result of observations made by the author as well as interviews
with some of the spaces concerned.

It’s the authors feeling however that inadequate provision has been made for facilities
that effectively cater for these temporary shows (The result sometimes is a rather
diminutive improvisation) For example shows are sometimes held in the section of the
gardens close to Crowne Plaza Monomotapa Hotel. The area has to be cordoned of to
separate the paying for the non-paying public ….. the materials used to do this that raises
concern. Makeshift black plastic sheets envelope the whole area so as to prevent the non-
paying public from viewing the show ….. the authors …. That a more environmentally
friendly way of doing this be enforced.
