WASH PROJECT

Funded by: Government of the Netherlands, UNICEF, Government of Rwanda and the local
communities involved.

Main objectives:

The aims are to increase access to safe drinking water and improve hygiene and sanitation for
800,000 people in Burera, Musanze, Nyabihu and Rubavu districts towards reaching Rwanda’s
MDG targets. January 2009 - December 2013.

Expected outcomes of the project:

The WASH Project Proposal was initiated in 2006 by the UNICEF Rwanda Country Office to
reach the MDGs in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector. Funding was approved and
committed by Government of the Netherlands in December 2008 for five years, from the 1st
January 2009 to the 31st December 2013. The project is located in the volcanic region which has
poor levels of water supply, hygiene and sanitation.

This project has 4 outputs:


- 800,000 people in communities, schools, health centres gain access and use of safe
water supply;
- Improved hygiene behaviour and practices;
- 800,000 people gain access and use of hygienic sanitation facilities in communities,
schools and health centres;
- Enhanced capacity of partners and users to promote good WASH practices at all levels.

The project is being implemented by districts, and MININFRA will provide technical support and
ensure monitoring and evaluation of the project.
