A Rainbow at the end of the Capital Campaign


The College's three-year Capital Campaign concluded this fall after exceeding the minimum goal of $4.5 million by 16% providing a pledged level of $5.2 million as of September 30. These gifts have made possible many long-term improvements. The exciting renovations and construction breathe n e w possibilities into the academic disciplines, library and computer services, and athletics. They also have helped the College keep stride with its continued growth. Here are some of the ways in which the Capital Campaign gifts have already begun to benefit the college:

COMPUTER EXPANSION: A new Hewlett Packard 3000 Series 70 mini computer has replaced the earlier HP mainframe in the Computer Center. Michele Miller, Director of the Computer Center, is enthusiastic about the increased speed and capability. LANGUAGE LABORATORY:
Dr. Vivetta Petronio, Director of the Department of English and Modern Languages, first requested a language laboratory in 1972 because such a laboratory makes an "enormous difference in the way students can learn a language; they have a chance to hear, speak, and understand more language. Language classes run only about three hours a week, but students can work in the lab as often as they like. They have an opportunity to hear native speakers, and to improve their own pronunciation. The new thirteen-station language laboratory is already serving more than eighty students in its first term of use. The computer-operated system allows students to use up to five programs simultaneously. They can study different languages, make their own programs, add to existing programs, and be paired with others for dialogues. "The system is wonderful for getting language patterns into the students' consciousness," says Instructor Barbara Moskwa who will add a Polish program soon. Right now five languages are taught: French, Spanish, German, Italian, and English as a Second Language.

LIBRARY:
Library acquisitions and services have grown by 16,000 volumes in the past few years, as a result of the Capital Campaign. Library Director Joanne Cooper says, 'This library has been significantly enriched through the generosity of the people of the College and local corporate industry. This commitment to the academic purposes of our students and faculty also enriches the intellectual life of the Erie community as a whole." Hammermill Library's volumes (books and eqivalents) now number 127,000.

"With this and our other equipment, and with our small class size, students have a superior environment for learning," adds Dr. Jack Williams. "When they graduate, students will have a working familiarity with equipment used in industry. It gives our students a better shot, and that's a big plus!"

CHEMISTRY LAB:
The infrared spectrophotometer and ultraviolet spectrophotometer are near state-of-the-art instruments that the chemistry department uses for analyzing specific compounds and checking the purity of compounds. The equipment is of a high quality and sophistication unusual to be owned by a college of Mercyhurst's Freshman Dan Herr and Marlin Dixon in the size. Dr. James Murowchick says, "As Library. an undergraduate at most colleges, chemistry students would never have the hands-on opportunity they have COMMUNICATIONS here"

SCHOLARSHIPS AND LOANS:


Many of the scholarships that had already existed were boosted in value as a result of the Campaign. These increases allow greater numbers of students to enjoy generous loans and grants. Among the student loans is the Walker Loan Program. Senior HRIM major Fred Mazzeo says, "Without this loan, I wouldn't have been able to return this term. Although I have a part-time job, my $2.01 per hour waiter's wage didn't give me enough for college." Fred, in his last years of education and facing an emergency financial situation, is the type of student for whom these loans were intended.

LABORATORY:

Broadcast-quality equipment in the communications laboratory lets communications majors in the radio/tv track learn modern TV productions skills. An editing unit, for example, not only electronically splices and assembles video programs, but also permits special effects (fadeouts, wipes, freeze frames) and color corrections. Students can mix sound and incorporate music and special sound effects (reverberations, echoes, and so on) on the professional audio board. A character generator or "video typewriter" creates graphics,

SENIOR RESEARCH LAB:


'The new Olympus photomicroscope helps tremendously in teaching biology students . . . and in departmental research," says Dr. Michael Campbell whose own area is aquatic ecology. With the instrument, science faculty and students can take top-quality microphotos, including those of living tissue. A built-in light meter automatically sets exposure, and high-quality phase-contrast objective lenses give definition without requiring the usual tissue-staining. Sister M. Eymard Poydock uses the instrument in her cancer research. Sister has been experimenting with mixtures of vitamins B-12 and C, forming cobalt ascorbate, a substance which seems to be showing good results in reversing several types of cancers in animals and humans.

EGAN ADDITION COMPLETED:


During the summer of 1987, construction on the new Egan/Sullivan wing was begun and is now ready for use by the Mercyhurst community. The beautiful addition features three special areas: an expanded cafeteria, a Hotel and Restaurant Upstairs, Sullivan Hall is a 2500 square-feet meeting area available to handle many of the college's large-group social and academic functions. Picture windows offer beautiful vistas of the Mercyhurst campus. Especially impressive are the views of the Grotto and Garvey Park. The HRIM wing includes three classrooms and a training kitchen for the burgeoning department. This year 225 full-time students are HRIM majors. Graduating seniors are receiving on the average more than four job offers each. Marriott Hotels management rated Mercyhurst's HRIM program number one among 163 institutions. Department Head John Wolper said, "We're grateful for the vote of confidence from the Board in committing extensive financial resources to the name and reputation of HRIM . -.. We feel that our hard work has paid off and will continue to pay handsome future dividends in terms of grants we are receiving, placements and cooperative ventures."

he disaster at Three Mile Island might not have occurred had the power-plant workers there been more aware of their internal rhythms . . . . We humans have a number of important internal rhythms, some with which we are very familiar. The heartbeat rhythm has long been a symbol of life itself, while the behavior patterns of women and men have been strongly influenced by the female's menstrual rhythm. Certainly our lives are dependent, consciously or unconsciously, on a variety of rhythms. Students of animal behavior have known for some time that few aspects of animal behavior go unaffected by rhythms. More recently physiologists and physicians have become sensitive as well to the effects that internal rhythms can have upon human biochemistry and medical responses, while perceptive administrators and business people have also become aware and respectful of their influences. These two commonly recognized rhythms, heartbeat and menstrual cycle, are internally generated within the body. The spontaneous and periodic nature of both these rhythms can now be explained at the biochemical level, which incidental-

ly can account for their ability to be modified by stressful external influences. A third rhythm is less familiar by name but well-known to most people by its effects. It may account for the unfortunate and otherwise inexplicable human error at Three Mile Island. It accounts for the phenomenon of jet lag, and it gives us our sense of time. This rhythm is called the circadian rhythm, so called because it is "about a day* (L circa + dies) in length. Although it has been observed in nearly all living organisms, it is more clearly expressed in some, such as mice and men, than in others, such as cats. In humans more than fifty body functions have been shown to vary with circadian rhythmicity. Some commonly studied variables are sleep, body temperature, general metabolism and numerous hormone levels.

Unlike the heartbeat and menstrual cycles, the circadian rhythm is not yet explained biochemically although we do know that it originates in a specific area of the hypothalamus of the brain. In birds circadian rhythm is generated in another area of the brain, the pineal organ. In fact, in experiments the pineal was removed from two house sparrows and switched between them. Before the pineal tissue was reimplanted, the animals had lost their rhythmicity. Upon completion of the transplanting, each bird adopted the precise rhythm of the other. Not only was this technical achievement remarkable, but it suggests that the control of the period length of the rhythm could be confined within a small portion of the brain. In humans these rhythms give us our sense of time. For example, if we do not wear watches, we become remarkably good, within three to five minutes' accuracy, at judging the precise time of day. This ability allowed our ancestors to know where to be at the right time, when food was going to be ready, and how to gauge t h e m s e l v e s to reach home before nightfall. When we are reasonably rested, these rhythms wake us at nearly the same time

every day; they make us hungry at our customary meal times (whether we need food or not); and they help to prepare the biochemistry of our stomachs, intestines and liver for the onslaught of nutrients we are about to send them. In essence, our bodies are trying to be efficient. At different times of day we become involved in different activities. These activities require peak functioning of different organs, with different enzymes and chemical reactions being emphasized. Our circadian rhythm is a major factor in preparing the body for those activities. Unprepared, we can have difficulty getting to sleep or, worse, getting up in the morning. We may have difficulty digesting our food properly or being able to attain peak physical or mental activity. There are two major disruptors which can disturb our circadian rhythms and cause our bodies to become unable to properly coordinate activities and to prepare the proper biochemistry at the appropriate time. One of these factors is drugs. While very few drugs have an effect on circadian rhythm, there is a good deal of evidence showing that two major social drugs do so, alcohol and A-9-THC, the primary psychoactive chemical in marijuana. Consequently, one of the disruptive effects resulting from the abuse of these drugs is the inability to function with normal mental and physical efficiency for the next day or two after excessive use. The second factor that can confuse the circadian rhythm relates to the slightly different cycle length in each person (seldom precisely 24 hours for anyone). Consequently, the internal circadian rhythm must be "reset" to the external natural 24hour daily rhythm. Environmental or external cues called Zeitgebers ("time givAUTUMN, 1987

changed shifts and were apparently unable to be mentally alert enough to cope with the emergency. Few of us can deal with emergencies at 3 am as well as we can at 3 pm. A recent study by behaviorists working with industry showed that, when circadian rhythm principles were followed within a special regime of shift rotation, worker satisfaction with the work schedule, subjective health, and productivity were all higher, while personnel turnover was lower. The business community would do itself a favor by becoming aware of this type of information as they did the phenomenon of jet lag, which has the same physiological basis. Medical doctors are becoming more receptive to circadian principles now that is has been shown that some drugs such amphetamines can have dramatically differing effects when administered at different times of day. While biologists have become impressed with the importance of circadian rhythms, we are nonetheless unimpressed with the popular notion of "biorhythms." Put simply, the concepts behind biorhythms violate a large number of basic truths regarding well-studied internal rhythms or biological phenomena in general: "biorhythms" as popularly described are not adjustable as are heart rate, menstrual cycles, and circadian rhythms. What this means is that if an individual awakens at different times each day and/ or eats at different times each day, the body's efforts to reset the circadian rhythm will be confused and efficiency diminished. What is important for students to realize is that maintaining regular sleeping and eating habits can greatly help their school work through improved physical and mental stability. Furthermore, since their general frame of mind including their ability to be friendly and interested in other people will be improved, regular living habits may also enhance their social lives. Such regularity requires good planning and minimal procrastination, but the rewards are great.

Fulfillment of a Mission
An excerpt from Sister Carolyn Herrmann's Commencement Address
his moment is very special for me. I accept this honorary degree with gratitude and with a nostalgia that is peculiarly my own. Despite the fact that I am acknowledging my age, I want you to know that most of my life has been spent here on this campus. I came here as a high school freshman; completed my high school and college education and served on the faculty and the administration as a Sister of Mercy for many more years. I think that fact that is, my longevity at this college gives me the right and perhaps even the obligation to speak certain words to you today . . . The Sisters of Mercy and the trustees of Mercyhurst College have clearly stated the reason for the existence of this college. We need to recall this reason especially now as we commemorate this sixtieth anniversary. Let me begin first with the Sisters of Mercy, who founded Mercyhurst College in 1926. Its founding was not just a business enterprise or a way to provide employment for the Sisters and others. No it was the fulfillment of a mission. The mission of the Sisters of Mercy was just recently restated in these words: Listening prayerfully to the Holy Spirit we, Sisters of Mercy, consecrated apostolic religious in the Church Are united in our desire To minister with compassion The spiritual and corporal works of mercy to the poor, sick and ignorant." The Sisters of Mercy are called to the work of education. Catherine McAuley in 1831 saw that the way out of poverty and misery for the people of Ireland was that of education. In our mission statement, we use the work "ignorant.". .. One who is ignorant frequently not only lacks knowledge but tends to form prejudicial judgments and to act out of bias and bigotry. I will refer later to the increasing evidence of racism in our country one of the results of ignorance. The last paragraph of the Sisters of Mercy Mission Statement reads: "Mindful of the needs of the times,

the solution is a re-commitment to the liberal arts as the essential core of knowledge. We must be a center of Christian humanism.

In cooperation with people of good will, We strive to direct our works of love, justice and peace for the sake of the Kingdom of God." In 1971, the Articles of Incorporation and the By-Laws of Mercyhurst College were restated. The preamble to the ByLaws reads in parts: "As the direct responsibility of the Sisters of Mercy, Mercyhurst College has acquired stature as a private institution whose educational philosophy is best described as Christian Liberal Arts. Two tasks are implied in the term: 1. the maintenance of a curriculum that forms minds to a right view of the universe and of man's place in it as a social and intelligent being; and 2. the creation of a milieu in which

Judaeo-Christian values are accepted norms of behavior. Guided by this philosophy, and now willing to share these tasks, we Trustees of Mercyhurst College assume the responsibility of preparing students for participation in the conflicts and opportunities political, social and religious of the contemporary scene." It is good for a college to review its mission in the light of the needs of the times. In a talk delivered to the Mercy Higher Education Colloquium in June, 1986, Sr. Patricia McCann, Sister of Mercy of Pittsburgh, spoke of the challenges facing not just Catholic higher education but also the Catholic Church and United States culture . In reviewing the history of the Catholic Church in this country, she pointed out that the Church, which was an immigrant Church in the 18th and 19th century, has now become part of the mainstream. While this was happening to Catholics, another phenomenon was developing which was to affect all Americans. This was the emergence of a civil religion described by sociologist Robert Bellah as "a genuine perception of transcendent religious reality on the part of the nation." In the absence of a state church to provide unifying myths which every society needs, a civil religion had evolved. A civil religion need not be bad. It can seem wholesome and necessary in regard to national unity. Its quality, however, is in direct relationship to the leadership at any given time. For example, how moved we all are, even now, when we hear Abraham Lincoln's words in his Gettysburg address, 'This nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth." But civil religion becomes less noble when it becomes the deification of the nation; when the nation becomes an object of worship. Again, Robert Bellah, writing in the 1970's, saw the Vietnam era as moving the country in a less noble direction of civil religion. Indeed, our present U.S. foreign policy allows the greatest of evils in the name of freedom and democracy. This civil religion in its negative aspects and as it is adopted by some Catholics, has the potential to destroy the very heart of the Catholicity of the U.S. C h u r c h and its institutions. To make this concrete, let us recall that the papal encyclicals and other church pastorals of the last 50 years have emphasized three themes: peace, global responsibility and preferential option for the poor, while U.S. domestic and foreign policy emphasize militarism, nationalism and materialism/consumerism. At this time of national crisis in the Church and in society, Catholic colleges Mercyhurst College in particular are called to educate leaders for a difficult and uncertain future. We face the possibility of nuclear destruction, pollution of the environment, the breakdown of family life, the despair of our younger generation, the aging of our society and its accompanying problems, an emergence of racism on college campuses and throughout the country. What is the solution? For a Catholic college, the solution is a re-commitment to the liberal arts as the essential core of knowledge. We must be a center of Christian humanism. In a recent article, Hans Kung says that "the phenomenon of religion is one of the specifically human forms

of expression." What we need is not a narrow sectarian religiosity but a freeing, enabling, authentic religiousness which calls society to its truest, best, most holistic expression. This is the essence of a college or university since its medieval inception. Let me repeat here one sentence from the preamble to the By-Laws of Mercyhurst College which I read earlier "We trustees of Mercyhurst College assume the responsibility of preparing students for participation in the conflicts and opportunities political, social and religious of the contemporary scene.77 I ask you graduates, Are you prepared to "make a difference," to be a prophetic voice at this time of national crisis? The TV networks are devoting time to the problems of teen-age suicide, pregnancy, run-aways and throw-aways. . . . I hope you have really taken advantage of the liberal arts core courses in philosophy, theology, literature, history, science and art and have not just settled for development of skills that will enable you to make a living. If you find that you are equipped only to make a living and not to live a full, happy committed life, your time here has not been used to your best advantage. I take this opportunity to challenge the trustees, the administration and the faculty of this college to re-commit themselves to the "educational philosophy best described as Christian liberal arts." . . . It is such a Catholic liberal arts college that would fulfill our mission of "directing our works of love, justice and peace for the sake of the Kingdom of God." Sister Carolyn, former President of Mercyhurst was presented an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Graduation on May 24, 1987.

KUJAWIAKI DANCE TROUPE JOINS 'HURST


reserving, expanding, celebrating Polish heritage, the Kujawiaki Dance Troupe (The "Kuj") is embarking this fall/winter on intense rehearsal sessions aimed at their annual performance tour to several major cities. Formerly affiliated with Alliance College for 22 years, the folk team is now part of Mercyhurst culturally and academically. Sixteen talented students, under the direction of Lawrence G. Kozlowski, bring nostalgia and a step toward world peace through Polish songs, dances, and costumes. Still other students participate as seamstresses, musicians, and stage crew. By expressing the culture which has its roots in Poland's hamlets and villages, the students channel their idealism through folk art media. They enjoy their work as much as their audiences enjoy watching them dance. Among their audiences was President Lyndon Johnson who invited Kujawiaki to perform at the White House Christmas Party in 1966. In all, the Kuj has presented over 600 performances in 32 states and Europe. "Each time we perform," says Kozlowski, "the people in the audience are xwith' us on the stage, and more important," he adds, "afterwards when the dancers c o m e down to meet and thank the audience, we're sharing, in the best sense, ourselves and our ethnic traditions." The Kujawiaki Dance Troupe will become part of the College's Polish Studies Program. It was a cold Spring in early May, 1945, and the war was about to end. On the east bank of the Elbe River, retreating German troops, refugees, and advancing Russian troops were all piled up, the Germans trying to get across to the American side. The bridges were all out, so the Americans had built pontoon bridges, and river barges were shuttling passengers to the Western bank. The Russians were shelling the barges and the pontoon bridges. In annoyance, the Americans returned artillery fire even though the Americans and Russians were allies. The excerpted story, which follows, consists of the childhood images the author re- lie quietly, others scream and writhe. Men get on the barge. "Whatever happened to woman and children first?" says my mother. They argue. He screams, "Somebody give me a pistol so I can shoot this hag." The men laugh. He screams louder, "This is an order!" The men laugh louder, "You know what you can do with your orders Siegfried!" We get on the barge and cross the river. On the other side we get on a truck. The truck takes us to a church. A man helps people get off the end of the truck. He is wearing a white band across his chest. It is my turn. His face is black, his hands are bigger than any hands. I shrink back. He smiles; he takes some white gloves from his belt and puts them on. I understand and let him lift me off the truck. He smiles and says words I don't understand. Inside the church someone gives me a cup of warm milk. The whole floor is covered with row after row of straw beds. We sleep. We sleep forever. Dr. Angela Elston, Assistant Professor in our English Department, has written a good deal of fiction and poetry. "Bardo Plane" is an excerpt from the novel she is currently completing. Antoine Dennison, the illustrator, is a 14year-old student at the School for the Performing Arts in the Erie School District.

Women's Soccer Continues to Grow


I ercyhurst started women's soccer a year ago, playing on the club level. Men's soccer had been a Laker sport since 1976, but an increased interest from female students led to a women's program ten years later. Elevated to the varsity level this year, Coach Andy Roth feels the program may exceed all expectations in a short time. "We will have a tremendous team in two years," Roth notes. "The women are better than they even realize. Right now, we're freshmen and sophomore dominated. If we can have another good recruiting year or two, we will represent the school very well." Roth has found that Mercyhurst has a chance to be a strong team before long. "We are in a hotbed of women's soccer," he comments. "Rochester, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Erie all have strong women's soccer p r o g r a m s . " D o u b l i n g as Mercyhurst's Director of Admissions, Roth has already taken good advantage of this, with six players from Erie, three from Pittsburgh and one from Rochester. After a slow start, the Lady Lakers have shown marked improvement. "We have a team that can walk on the field and realistically have a chance to win," Roth assesses. "Experience is a negative, but I'm proud of the team. They're getting better every game."

Laker Football Now Has Television Program


For the first time since the program was started seven years ago, the Mercyhurst football program has a network television show. "Tony DeMeo's Mercyhurst Laker Football Show" was aired every Sunday morning during the football season, at 11:00 a.m. on WJET-TV, an ABC affiliate. "We're very pleased to be working with WJEX' states Director of Athletics John Leisering. "The show is a step forward for the football program. We hope to be able to continue the show when basketball starts."

"Beating the cross-town rival and nationally-ranked team on their pitch has already reaped benefits for us in terms of rankings, media exposure and respect from our peers. "Whether we had won or lost, the team could have felt good about themselves for the effort they put forth," Burns continued. "I believe they played as hard as they could. They had nothing left at the end." Burns also expressed pleasure with the support of the Laker fans. Close to 700 people attended, more than half fans of the Blue and Green. Coach Bill Kalbaugh's men's basketball team faces an ambitious schedule as the 'Hurst begins its first season as a member of the Mideast Collegiate Conference. The Lakers will play a pair of games against the other members of the conference Gannon, LeMoyne, Philadelphia Textile, Pace, Adelphi and the University of Buffalo. Mercyhurst will also play a pair of games against Edinboro and Ashland, and will continue their series with powerful Cheyney. In all, the team will play 27 games, then compete in the Mideast Collegiate Conference Championship on March 3-5. The team which finishes first in league play has the opportunity to host the tournament, with the winner of the tournament receiving an automatic Division II playoff bid. Mercyhurst has thirteen home games, including a February 17 meeting with Division II runnerup Gannon at the Erie Civic Center.

Men's Soccer Upsets Gannon


Rick Burns was hired three years ago to inject life into a sagging Mercyhurst soccer program. But despite a 15-4-1 record last year and 13-4-1 chart in '86, the Lakers were still only the second-best team in town. That recently came to an end when the Lakers upended nationally-ranked Gannon, 1-0, in the second day of the Hamot Medical Center Soccer Classic. Junior Dave Delzell headed in a pass from senior Donnough Shaffrey ten minutes into the match for the lone goal. From there, Mercyhurst relied on defensive tactics and some spectacular goalkeeping by sophomore Joe Behr. Behr recorded 14 saves to earn the Outstanding Defender Award in the tournament. Augustinian Students "Doing Weir in U.S. University


Sometimes truth is really stranger than fiction. This is certainly true of the origins of the links between St. Augustine's College, Abbeyside and Mercyhurst College, Erie, Pennsylvania. The year was 1984: the place, New York and in the moment of respite from his summer work in the Big A p p l e , M i c h a e l Kelly, M o n a n g , Abbeyside, a former pupil of St. Augustine's College came upon a brochure from Mercyhurst College and read of the John F. Kennedy Scholarships being offered by the University. These were scholarships being offered to young Irish people to enable them to pursue a University education in the U.S.A., and had been established by the College authorities in order to honour the College's Irish heritage and to broaden its international dimension. By strange coincidence the arms of the College was the latin phrase "Carpe Diem," which loosely translated, means "grasp the opportunity." He came. He stayed. He studied. Then in 1985 he was j o i n e d by Fiona McGettigan from Donegal. But he himself proved such an able student that through his good offices, the Mercyhurst contacted Fr. Moran, Headmaster of St. Augustine's, with of view to selecting some more young students. The result was that in August, 1986 four Leaving Certificate pupils of St. Augustine's, Abbeyside Derry Kiely, Roderick Power, John Deasy and John Melody joined Michael Kelly at Mercyhurst College, Erie, Pennsylvania. I am personally keeping an eye on them, and find they need less and less attention as time goes by which is a sign they are acclimatising quite well." do offer opportunities for those willing to work at realising the great American dream. ON IRISH VISIT Recently Andy P. Roth, Director of Admissions at Mercyhurst, has been visiting Irish schools with a view to increasing the Irish student numbers at the College. On March 30th he visited St. Augustine's, and interviewed Leaving Certificate students interested in continuing studies in U.S.A. In his own words, "We would like to reserve several of these places for St. Augustine's." Yes, all success stories have their fund of folklore. If Michael Kelly had not opened the Mercyhurst brochure? If John Melody had not played in goal for Abbeyside? If? If? In the final analysis, it boils down to grasping opportunities offered. Let's h o p e that, this year again, some Dungarvan young people may be offered the chance to do just that.

"The Way We Were" in 1937


(I'm substituting for Pauline Jageman [and I'm a wreck]. Pauline is recovering at St. Vincent's Hospital from orthopedic surgery. These are Pauline's remarks.) e were before television. Before penicillin, the pill, polio shots, antibiotics and frisbees. Before frozen food, nylon, dacron, Xerox, Kinsey. We were before radar, fluorescent lights, credit cards and ballpoint pens. For us, time-sharing meant togetherness not computers; a chip was a piece of wood; hardware meant hardware; and software wasn't even a word. In those days bunnies were little rabbits, and rabbits were not Volkswagons. We were before Batman, Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer and Snoopy. Before DDT and vitamin pills, vodka (in the United States) and the white wine craze disposable diapers, jeeps and the Jefferson nickel. Before Scotch tape, M & M's, the automatic shift, zippers and Lincoln Continentals. When we were in college, pizzas, Cheerios, frozen orange juice, instant coffee, McDonalds, and nuns with short skirts were unheard of. We thought fast food was what you ate during Lent. Now consider what we did have in 1937 that college students today do not have. We had Housemothers and Big Sisters. We had daily Chapel, attired in our caps and gowns; and required courses in Bible, Speech, Manners and English Composition and Grammar. We had hats and white gloves, white table cloths and linen napkins and candles all long past gone! We were before FM radio, tape recorders, electric typewriters, word processors, Muzak, electronic music and disco dancing. We were before pantyhose and drip-dry clothes. Before ice makers and dish washers, clothes dryers, freezers and electric blankets. Before men wore long hair and earrings and women wore tuxedos. We got married first and then lived together. How quaint can you be? And we were the last generation that was so dumb as to think you needed a husband to have a baby! In our day cigarette smoking was fashionable, grass was mowed, coke was something you drank and pot was some$5,000 and start a Class of '37 Scholarship Fund. In December of 1986 our fund started with contributions of this size $1500. In February of 87 we had a Ground Hog luncheon and we had heard from enough of our classmates that our check was now this size $3100. After more letters and lots of enthusiasm our next check in May was this size $4200. By June 30th after more letters and phone calls (I never let my husband see the telephone Class of '37 present $6100 check to the bill for that month) our goal of $5000 College: had been realized!! And our check was Rita (Rectenwald) Kantz, Eleanor now this size $5400. (O'Sullivan) Keller, Adele Callahan, Marge So today October 3, 1987 our Alge, Margaret Anne (Mooney) Emling, Dr. check is for $6100 participation by Garvey 93.333 per cent of our class. Dr. Garvey The "Golden Girls of '37" present this check to you as the beginning thing you cooked in. We were before coin vending machines, jet planes, helicopters of the "Class of '37 Scholarship Fund". LONG LIVE THE CLASS OF '37!!! and interstate highways. In 1937 "made in Japan" meant junk, and the term "making out" referred to how well you did on an exam. In our time there were five-and-ten cent stores where you could buy things for five and ten cents. For just one nickel you could ride the streetcar, make a phone call, buy a Coke or buy enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards. You could buy a new Chevy coupe for $600, but who could afford that in 1937? Nobody and a pity, too, because gas was just eleven cents a gallon. We were not before the difference between the sexes was discovered, but we were before sex changes. We just made do with what we had. Class of'37: And so it was in 1937. Second Lieutenant Christine Marie Hoffman '86 died in the Northwest Airlines Flight #255

crash in the Detroit Metropolitan Airport on August 16,1987.Shewill be sadly missed by her family classmates, and the members of the faculty and administration. A geology major, Chris worked extensively with Dave Thomas who says of her, "Chris was sensitive to the needs of others and steadfast. . . she did not forget people. She was a reliable person who never missed any geology camping trips including the Virgin Islands expedition in her junior year. She was one to accomplish her goals and handle them well. For instance, she made numerous parachute jumps during her training, even though she was quite feminine and did not appear to the the 'type' That's the kind of quiet individualism she had. She was a wonderful student and a wonderful person. I miss her."

Alumni Get-Togethers
Mary Collins '83 and Ann Gilligan '84 hosted their own version of Homecoming this month for the northern California area Alumni: the picnic-style get-together was held at their home in San Francisco. Bob Fessler '83 and Theresa Fessler '84 organized a fall riverboat cruise for the New England Alumni. Among those attending (despite inclement weather) were Dan Schrader '83, Claudia Englert '82, Beverly Welsh Pini '75 and her husband Ross, Charlotte Kundrath '60 and several members of her family, and Alumni Director Tom Dore'. California Alumni participated in the First Annual Catholic Universities Alumni Outing along with alums from 50 other colleges. Bill Guyton '76 and Sam Veneziano '75 hosted the event. Forty Philadelphia and New Jersey Alumni plus Dr. Garvey, Tom Billingsley, Gary Bukowski, Athletic Director John Leisering, and Alumni Director Tom Dore' turned out in a great show of support for a pre-game get-together on the campus of Villanova before the grid-iron contest against Villanova. Also among the attendees were former faculty member Bill Bryan and former admissions director Jim Lanahan. The Lakers gave Villanova a first-rate fight with a final score of Villanova-35, 'Hurst-26. Chicago Area Alumni met for a luncheon in August at the Palmer House in downtown Chicago. Organizers of the event were Margaret Graves '53, Pierre Priestly '81. JeffRoessner in Cambridge for the 1987 Summer Study Program. Jeff Roessner, a Junior from Titusville, participated in the program this past summer. Roessner says, "My major is English, and so the time that I spent in England was especially apt for me in that I had the chance to actually see the country that has produced so much of our greatest literature. Seeing the cathedral at Canterbury and the history that it contains put a perspective on Chaucer that I could not have gotten in any other way. Also, I really enjoyed the production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night that I saw in Stratford. For me, there is a very large difference in reading a play and seeing a production. The English actors brought Shakespeare to life, and his genius really showed through. "As a field trip in my Comparative Politics class, we went to London to see Parliament: the common House of Commons and the lavish House of Lords. Besides all of the history that I saw, I did learn a great deal about politics. Also, I experienced the Cambridge style of study by writing a paper and then discussing it with my professor." After some research as to whom the ring might belong, Margaret was called and asked if she had recently lost her class ring. Her response was that she had lost her ring 20 years ago! Thanks to the efforts of SR. MARY PIERRE DEMBINSKI, RSM '64, Margaret was able to contact the individual who found her ring; owner and ring have since been reunited. For the last 24 years, Margaret has been a second grade teacher at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Erie, PA. She and husband, Richard, have three children: Richard, Jr., Elizabeth, and William, along with three grandchildren. The family resides at 725 East 25th Street, Erie, PA 16503. JUDITH JONES ROCHE reports that her eldest daughter is in her first year of college, while Judie is now in her 23rd year of teaching. Judie is employed at the Joseph A. Edgar School in New York. The New York State Education Department has recently recommended that the School's Compensatory Reading Program receive national recognition through the U.S. Department of Education. KATHLEEN LYNCH MURPHY, after receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mercyhurst, went on to obtain a Master of Science degree in 1976 from St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, NY. Her husband, Robert, since retiring from the Armed Forces, has been teaching Management and Leadership in the School of Business at St. Bonaventure. PHYLLIS AIELLO was presented the Distinguished Service Award by the Erie County Rape Crisis Center in April 1987. She was cited for her outstanding services and loving commitment to the Center and the community it serves. In June, Phyllis was also named Business Associate of the Year for her advocacy of women by the PENNABWA Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. In addition, she was elected Vice President of the Lake Erie Law Enforcement Association this past summer. Phyllis is the Director of Housing and Safety at Mercyhurst, and she resides at 2207 Wagner Avenue, Erie, PA 16510. BARBARA BRAIRTON has been appointed Director of Special Programs and Public Relations for the elementary and secondary schools of the Diocese of Erie, PA. She was appointed to the position by the Most Reverend Michael J. Murphy, Bishop of the Diocese, and she will represent the Diocese in relations with the public school sector on the local, state, and national levels. Barbara earned a BA degree in English from Mercyhurst, and an MA in Counseling and Education from John Carroll University. She has taught at Mercyhurst Prep and Gannon University in Erie. Supervising the activities of nine museum directors, coordinating efforts with an equal number of directors and curators, and serving the 20,000 students who are part of the program makes for a very challenging experience. SARAI i JORDAN ROSE, the first woman to graduate from the College's Sports Medicine Program, has been Head Athletic Trainer at Behrend College in Erie, PA for the past three years. Sarah notes that "the hardest part about this job is that you can't take the pain away; they may only have a sprained ankle nothing life threatening but they're still hurting." She is currently the only certified trainer (through the National Athletic Trainer's Association) among all 22 branch campuses of Penn State University, excluding the main campus in University Park, PA. Sarah's certified status and training reputation have earned her invitations to train athletes in the Pan Am Games.
