READING TECHNIQUES for teacher-led groups or students working during a literacy block

1. CHORAL READING: A selected group joins together and reads at the same time OR reads assigned lines in a poem. 2. DIALOGUE READING: Students read conversational parts. 3. RECIPROCAL READING: Two students are assigned roles: 1) both read a selection, then one asks questions; 2) both students summarize what theyve read; 3) both ask questions to clarify; 4) both predict what is next; and then, 5) they switch roles. 4. EAR-TO-EAR READING: Pair students, then turn chairs side-by-side and back-to-back. Students take turns reading from one book. One reads while the other listens. The reader may ask the listener questions. 5. PAIRED READING: The teacher 1) asks students to think about a question; 2) students read to find the answer; 3) both ask questions to clarify; and then, 4) they come together and share with the group. 6. INDIVIDUAL READING: Each student in the group reads silently and then responds in the group to specific questions asked by the teacher. 7. BUDDY READING: Students take turns reading and support each other by helping figure out words or provide short summaries. 8. JIGSAW READING: A small group meets with the teacher to read and discuss a section of expository text. The students in these small groups must become experts on their section and are responsible for teaching others. The teacher then meets with the next group to read and discuss another section. 9. COLLABORATIVE AND INDIVIDUAL READING: A collaborative group, pair of students, or the whole class reads a selection and then completes an extension activity such as a Venn diagram, semantic map, or other comprehension or vocabulary strategy. 10. LITERATURE CIRCLES: Students come together to share, discuss and read passages from selections they are independently reading. 11. READERS THEATRE: Students rehearse a Readers Theatre (or write their own) and present to the whole group.
