The Czars teacups with nodding dogs

COLLECTION of nodding dogs and a cup and saucer that once belonged to Czar Nicholas are among the items up for auction at the Three Counties Showground on Saturday. The sale, which starts at 10am, will be conducted by David Palmer of Bargain Hunt and Flog It! fame. He said he was very excited to have been invited to be the auctioneer of such an interesting, diverse and eclectic sale. The sale room reminds me of when I used to visit auctions as a boy with my father; a proper auction as it should be with anything and everything from a fine Imperial Russian cup and saucer having been part of the Service of Tsar Alexander Alexandrovich, later Tsar Nicholas III, to
a magnificent bronze Admiralty anchor formerly owned by the Lusty family of Lusty Lloyd Loom fame, to a box of nodding dogs truly something for everybody. The auction is to be held at The Grain Store, Priors Court, Long Green, GL19 4QL, where there will be a marquee with seating for up to 100 people. Homes in the sun headache

HE falling value of the pound is a big headache for many Britons who own homes abroad, with four in 10 of overseas homeowners finding it difficult to maintain their property in the past year, says a new survey. The research, from foreign currency specialists HiFX, claims that more than half 53 per cent of owners have struggled to keep their heads above water, while a quarter have lifted rental rates to cover rising costs. More than one million Britons currently own a home overseas, with France and Spain the most popular destinations but in the last 12 months, many people have seen their home in the sun become a problem, due to a weakening pound and rising bills. Some have had to dip into their savings to meet costs, or have had to try to sell their holiday home. According to HiFX 61 per cent of holiday home owners made a loss on their property in the last year, with 44 per cent in the process of trying to sell. However, selling is increasingly difficult. Twelve per cent of owners say their home has been on sale for more than 12 months.
