Started in 1957, as Malayan Cables Limited (the first cable manufacturer in Malaysia) Tenaga Cable Industries Sdn Bhd has a long fifty glorious years and illustrious history of growth and achievements. In 1999, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia utility giant, acquired majority shares through its wholly owned subsidiary, TNB Ventures Sdn Bhd and renamed the company as Tenaga Cable Industries Sdn Bhd or TCI. TCI plants are located at Lot 2, Jalan P/12, Section 10, Kawasan Perusahaan Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia which occupies more than 54, 000 sq meters of land area and more than 14,000 sq meters of build up area. TCI is principally involved in the manufacturing and distribution of a wide range of power cables. These include low to medium voltage XLPE cables, Aluminium Conductors Steel Reinforced ACSR, Optical Ground Wires OPGW, Aluminium rods and Aluminium Alloy Rods, and Low Voltage General Cables. TCI manufacture various types of XLPE cables mainly Low Voltage XLPE Insulated Power Cables, Medium Voltage XLPE Insulated Power Cables, and Aerial Bundle Cables. The Medium Voltage XLPE supports up to 66 kV. Single-core, 3-core and triplex. Apart from that TCI also manufacture Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR), All Aluminium Alloy Conductor (AAAC), Aluminium Rods and Aluminium Alloy Rods. TCI also manufacture various types of pilot cables according to TNB standard specificition. Some basic construction include twisted pair PE insulated tape of copper wire with .914 mm., binder tape, PETP tape, optional plastic tape, aluminium tape lapped with PETP, PVC Bedding with termite repellant, single layer galvanized steel wire armour, and PVC sheath with termite repellant.

Composite Optical Ground Wire or OPGW, combines ground wire for shielding overhead power transmission lines together with optical fibers for transmission of communication signals. TCI have the capability to manufacture both SUS type and Slotted type of OPGW. Our Memorandum of Understanding with PLP Australia enables us to supply all types of accessories of OPGW. TCI plants capasity are as follows; 6,000 tons of Aluminium conductor, 10,000 tons of Aluminium Rods, 1,400 Km of OPGW conductors, and 360 Km of cables. Apart from cable manufacturing TCI also provide installation services. This include the supervision of OPGW and Hardwares for 500 KV transmission line from Air Tawar sub-station to TNB Jana Manjong Power Station. Some of the completed projects are 500 KV TNB Transmission System Development project, 132Kv overhead transmission line from PMU Panchor to PMU Kandis, Kelantan, 132Kv XLPE underground cables reconfiguration at PMU Tampoi Industry Park, Johore, 33 KV TNB infrastructure projects in Peninsular Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Sepang, Sabah East Coast Transmission Project, MSC Projects, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya. XLPE PROPERTIES
Cross linked Polyethylene (XLPE) materials are derived through processes which cause a crossbonding activity among conventional polyethylene (PE) molecules. Such cross-bonded PE matrixes, while retaining the same outstanding electrical properties as conventional PE, demon-strate, in this new form, vastly improved thermal and mechanical properties, especially with regard to high temperatures strength. Figure 1 represents the structure of a conventional PE molecule. Such molecules will, in actuality, comprise somewhere between 1000 4000 carbon atoms. By causing the formation of cross-bonds (cross-linking Fig.2) between such enormous molecules, a very tough material will result (as is the case with vulcanized rubber), where only a slight deformation can possibly occur even at high temperature. This is the reason why XLPE is superior in heat resistance. Today, there are several methods that can be applied to vulcanize polyethylene, and any one process is selected according to the kind of cable involved. For high voltage cable, chemical vulcanization is used, wherein a low density polyethylene is mixed with a vulcanizing (crosslinking) agent and heated to let the chemical reaction take place.

44

COMPOSITE FIBER-OPTIC OVERHEAD GROUND WIRES

An OPGW combines a ground wire for shielding overhead power transmission lines together with optical fibers for transmission of communication signals.
Advantages of OPGW Telecommunication systems with high capacity and reliability can be obtained because the optical fibers used have low loss and increased bandwidth compared with metallic conductors and are free from electromagnetic interference. Economical systems can be achieved because power transmission and signal transmission are possible simultaneously, by one transmission line. BASIC CONSTRUCTION Features of TCI's OPGW A unique spiral-grooved aluminium-alloy spacer houses the optical fibers in individual grooves to relieve strain during stringing and actual use and to make tower-top handling easy. To give the optical fibers adequate heat resistance for use in OPGW, UV acrylate type of optical fiber bundles is provided. 1. Aluminium-Clad Steel Wire (AC wire) 2. Optical Fiber Unit (OP unit) 3. OPTICAL FIBER CHARACTERISTICS

Usually single mode (SM) optical fiber is applied for OPGW. To achieve the long distance transmission for large volume of data, dispersion shift single mode fiber (DSF) is recommended. Typical characteristics of optical fibers are shown in Table 1.

OPGW OUTER STRAND

PROPERTY OF OUTER STRANDS

Aluminium clad steel wire (AC wire) is generally used for the strands of outer layer of OPGW. The merits of using AC wire are:High lightning resistance (comparing with Aluminium) High Tensile strength And Aluminium Alloy wire is also used in combination with AC wire according to the requirement. The properties of typical types of AC wire and Aluminium Alloy wire are shown in Table 2. Cross sectional view of AC wire is shown in Figure 2.
