History of Arnis Arnis, as a martial art, originated and developed in the Philippine soil. This was practiced and mastered by early Filipinos for defense and self preservation. It was known in ancient Philippines as kali believed to have derived from the Indonesian word tjakalele which means fencing. Later on during the Spanish regime in the Philippines Filipinos called it arnis. Historically, It was a derivation from the word Arnes, a colorful trappings on defensive armors used in moro-moro plays which were then a socio-religious plays depicting the victory of Christian Spaniards over the muslims. The shows were used primarily as propaganda and also for entertainment. During that time, The Filipinos were prohibited by the Spanish regime to practice their martial arts so the staging of moro-moro gave the players a good excuse to practice their fighting art. The Arnis system of fighting includes empty hands techniques which employ the flowing method of training like the tapi-tapi(Tapping) system to develop reflexes, sensitivity, timing, and good coordination. It also utilized kicking techniques but usually applied to the lower part of the body. Traditional arnis is usually practiced in three forms of play. They are solo baston or single-stick in which a long stick or baston is used; the espada y daga or sword and dagger in which a long stick or sword and a wooden dagger are used; and the sinawali, a native term applied because of its intricate movements of the two sticks resemble the weave of sawali(crisscross fashion), the bamboo split weave pattern used in walling and matting which was very common in Visayas Islands. Other named for Arnis Eskrima (also known as Arnis and in the West sometimes as Kali) is the umbrella term for the traditional martial arts of the Philippines, which emphasize weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives and other bladed weapons, and various improvised weapons. STRIKING Attacking position: From an open stance, move left foot forward, put hands-on-guard pos t on. a.LEFT HAND STRIKE Attacker moves right foot forward, prepares for a left temple strike by positioning the hand holding the cane at the back of the ear then swing the cane forward to strike the opponent's left temple. The closed palm should face upward. b.RIGHT TEMPLE STRIKE From the initial position, attacker moves right foot forward, prepares for a right temple attack by positioning the hand holding the cane at the back of the left ear, then swing the cane forward to strike the opponent's right temple. The closed palm should face downward. c.LEFT SHOULDER STRIKE From the initial position, attacker moves right foot forward, prepares for a left temple strike by positioning the hand holding the cane at the back of the right ear, then swing the cane forward to strike the opponent's left shoulder. The closed palm should face upward.

d.RIGHT SHOULDER STRIKE From the initial position, attacker moves right foot forward, prepares for right shoulder strike by positioning the hand holding the cane at the back of the left ear , then swing the cane forward to strike the opponent's right shoulder. The closed palm should face downward. e.THRUST TO STOMACH From the initial position ,move right foot forward, draw back hand holding the cane ,then thrust the opponent's stomach using the t p of the cane f.LEFT CHEST ATTACK From the initial position ,move right foot forward, draw back hand holding the cane, position it at the back of the right ear. The cane should point forward then thrust the opponent's left chest. The closed palm should face downward. g.RIGHT CHEST ATTACK From the initial position, bring the hand holding the cane at the s de of the body, closed palm facing the chest. The tip of the cane should point the opponent's chest, then thrust the cane to the opponent's chest. h.RIGHT KNEE ATTACK From the initial position, move right foot forward, bring the cane above the shoulder at the back of the ear, then swing the cane downward to strike the opponent's right knee. .LEFT KNEE ATTACK From the initial position, move right foot forward, bring the hand holding the cane above the right shoulder, then swing the cane downward to strike the opponent's left knee. j.LEFT EYE ATTACK From the initial position, pos t on the hand at the back of the right ear. The tip of the cane should point to the opponent's eye, closed palm should face outside. Move right foot forward, then thrust the cane to strike the opponent's left eye. k.RIGHT EYE ATTACK From the initial position, pos t on the hand holding the cane at the s de of your body. The palm should face the chest, the tip of the cane should point towards the opponent., then thrust the cane towards the opponent's right eye. l.CROWN STRIKE From the initial post on, bring the hand holding the cane above the shoulder then move right forward. Swing the cane downward to strike the opponent's head.
