The principles of operation, the design, and performanee of a fiber-optic temperature-distribution sensor are discussed. The sensor uses optical time domain reOectometry to detect temperatureinduced changes of backscatter power at many separate locations in the fiber. A measurement accuracy of 1degC with a spa tial resolution of I m is attainable over a fiber length of 100 m.
