Re: Illegal posters and signs on utility poles

Posting signs, posters and flyers on wooden or metal utility poles is against the law. It is a
trespassing. Persons attaching posters or signs to privately owned poles may be charged with
Criminal Mischief III (ORS 164.345) This act also violates a number of City of Portland and
National Electrical Safety codes, including Portland City Codes 14A.50.070 and 17.64.040 and
NESC Rule 217A4 and Rule 237A.

Furthermore, the quantity of posters, flyers and signs being attached to private property (utility
poles) creates a hazardous condition for persons responsible for maintaining the poles. Within
the City of Portland, these poles are owned by several entities including but not limited to:
Portland General Electric, Pacific Power, Qwest, Verizon and the City of Portland.

You are hereby notified that posters and flyers containing your name have been posted on utility
poles within the City of Portland. Regardless of whether you personally placed the posters and
flyers on the poles, or it was done by a person or persons representing you, this activity must
cease immediately. City Code states that the party benefiting from the advertisement is the
responsible party 14A.50.070 Advertising on Streets
It is unlawful for any person whose name appears upon, or who is responsible for posting,
any notice or advertisement posted in violation of this Section to permit the notice or
advertisement to remain posted after having received a request to remove it.
. Failure to heed this notice may result in fines and other penalties being issued in your name
and a bill for the removal of the offending signs, posters and flyers
