SNAPTRACK GSM TEST GROUP

Founded at the 1999 GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, the SnapTrack GSM Test Group is a consortium of Global System for Mobile telecommunications (GSM) wireless carriers, handset suppliers, applications providers, infrastructure manufacturers and semi-conductor manufacturers that are evaluating SnapTracks breakthrough Wireless Assisted Global Positioning System (WAG) system for wireless handset location. Wireless Assisted GPS is airinterface neutral and may be used on GSM, CDMA, Analog and other wireless platforms. The STGTG serves to represent its members interests regarding common industry issues for the adoption of Wireless Assisted GPS-based wireless location technologies, such as:

Standards and regulatory issues work with: GSM Association ETSI ITU EEC Wireless location technology testing: Applicability in the GSM environment Device integration Applications development Application/market opportunities Commercial Emergency Roaming The SnapTrack GSM Test Group collectively supports over 30 million subscribers. Carrier members include: France Telecom Mobiles (France) T-Mobil (Germany) Esat Digifone (Ireland) Omnitel Pronto Italia (Italy)

BellSouth Mobility DCS (US) Powertel (US) BT Cellnet (UK) Vodafone AirTouch Communications PLC (UK and US) Telefonica M viles (Spain) Infrastructure providers and chip manufacturers include: CMG (Netherlands) Siemens Information and Communication Networks (Germany) Motorola (US) Nortel (France) Texas Instruments (US) SignalSoft (US)

As location-enabled services become increasingly important for GSM operators to deploy, Telefonica M viles is taking a leading role in such trials. This helps us to learn how our applications and services may be developed to make profitable use of these new capabilities, shaping our business strategy for the future.
Mr. Fernando Soriano Vallejo, Head of Value Added Services, Telefonica M viles

Accuracy and cost are two of the industrys primary concerns regarding the ability of location technology to deliver profitable location-based services. This test group will help carriers evaluate the benefits of SnapTrack technology as a method for the near-term delivery of valueadded location services.

SnapTracks system pinpointed nearly 100 percent of test calls during the three-week series of audited trials in Madrid, Spain, typically locating and tracking callers from within 5-20 meters, even in challenging places like dense urban canyons, the interiors of buildings and inside automobiles.

The STGTG have completed an 18-month trial and investigation roadmap. Extensive testing has demonstrated high levels of accuracy, availability (yield) and time-tofirst-fix across a wide range of typical environments. The positive results of these tests will enable member companies to move to enhanced levels of integration and application development. It is anticipated that market trial activities will emerge from the STGTG 3Q 2001. SnapTrack is committed to working with its STGTG partners to bring the benefits of wireless location technologies and applications to its group members and licensees. The STGTG scored industry firsts in opening trials with Spanish network

operator Telefonica M viles in 3Q1999, and yet again with its 2Q2000 pan-European roaming trials with host carrier France Telecom Mobiles. In 3Q1999 SnapTrack and the STGTG demonstrated end-to-end mobile location service and proved the benefits of using highly precise location technologies to personalize the delivery of Internet content to mobile consumers in its trials on the Telefonica Mviles GSM network by guiding callers to ATM machines, hotels, restaurants, and other points of interest. In 2Q2000, the pan-European roaming trials conducted by members of SnapTracks GSM Test conclusively proved that SnapTracks technology can accurately and rapidly locate mobile phones in a wide range of European

calling environments, and support seamless multi-country location roaming services. Wireless handset location roaming trials were conducted in and around the major urban centers of Paris, Bonn, London and Utrecht, as well as other locations. A single Location Server hosted by France Telecom Mobiles provided location calculation support for all of the trial locations in Western Europe, and demonstrated SnapTracks unique ability to provide cross-network roaming and wide area service coverage from a single service center. Callers were successfully located on successive networks during the trials in a wide range of environments, from city centers, to rural villages and motorways.
