The Vicar or Christs representative with the keys of Heaven and Hell. He ruled it on a belhald of God. Everyone believed that when Christ had finally ascended to Heaven he had left St. Peter to act as his representative or Vicar. He gave him even the keys of Heaven and Hell. St. Peter was the first Pope, and every Pope afterwards inherited his powers. Gods commands reached (came to) every men, laymen, however important they were. Even a great laymen, count or earl, duke or King, was supposed to treat the Church with respect and obedience. Enemies of the Church, It was thought , were enemies of God. Something that even the toughest warrior and proudest King feared was the punishment of excommunication. Once a man had been excommunicated the Church would have n othing to do with him. He could not be married. If he were to die, there would be no last sacraments or decent burial for him. What was more, he would be spurned by his friends, for anyone trying to help him would incur the same dreadful punishment. King John and the barons excuse to break their oath. He was obliged to sign the Magna Carta. It was an important symbol of political freedom. The King promised all freemen protection from his officers, and the right to a fair and legal trial. The nobles who w rote it and forced King John had one main: to make sure John did not go beyond his rights as feudal lord. The nobles did not allow Johns succes sors to forget this charter and its promises. Every King had to recognise the document. Magna Carta marks a clear stage in the collapse of English feudalism.
