Dear Secondary Parents,

7th September 2011

This is the time of the year when preparation for the Week on the Wild Side (WOWS) trips takes place. WOWS is a key component of education at NIST for students in Years 7-11 as it takes students out of their usual environment to spend time meeting challenges in the natural world. The trips are an expectation for all students in Years 7 to 11 as we believe that they have educational value which will transfer to all aspects of a childs life. WOWS trips are designed to provide a developmentally appropriate challenge to students. They build year on year into a comprehensive experience by Year 11. In a society where it is becoming harder to allow students to develop independence, the WOWS are designed to challenge students at an appropriate level, in order to become more confident, independent, collaborative and resilient. These attributes have a direct link with other aspects of learning. Current educational psychology makes strong connections between the ability of students to solve their own problems and meet new challenges and the qualities that lead to academic success. This year, depending on the year level and trip, WOWS will take place at some time from Thursday 8th to Friday 16th December. There will be briefing about WOWS for students on 28th September during House time and for parents on Wednesday 5th October from 19:00. From time to time students are unavailable for WOWS. In order to help us with logistics please let the Secondary Office know by Tuesday 13 th September if your child will be unavailable. With Best Wishes,

Julian Edwards Secondary School Principal
