3 Read the text out loud as a group 1x 3 Reread the text as a group out loud, thinking this time about the voice of the author 3 (focus free writing) write about the voice in this piece: Who do you think the author is referring to? 6 (share) Using a thought chain, have the group share their written piece 3 Reread the text out loud, this time underline words that jump at you, underline phrases that you find interesting or that you dont understand, or words that you hate/love about the text 3-5 (focus writing) Using those words you underlined summarize the theme of the text in one or two sentences 6 (share) do a read around 2 Stage: Divide the class into 5 groups. Each group will be assigned to perform a segment of the piece. Group 1: has the first line up until the word stomach Group2: has on Sundays through crease Group3: has this is how you grow okra through breakfast Group 4: this is how to behave through for a cold Group 5: this is how to make good medicine through the last line 6 Every group has to reread their piece and think as a group how you would reenact the piece. Designate one person as the narrator and two/three people as the actor. Act out the scenes as the narration is spoken. 10 have each group perform their piece to the rest of the class Return back to your seats 5 make two columns: List the advice you like in this piece in one column and advice you would not follow in the other. 5 (ffw) Compare and contrast the positive and negative pieces of advice; which one would you resist to follow, which one would you be okay to follow? 3 (ffW) Imagine that you are the voice in this piecewho are you? The girl? Or are you the person telling the girl what to do? Write one piece of advice you would give the girl you can give a parental tone or you can be the voice inside the girls head 5-7 (share) this writing piece as a group

10-15 (focus fw) write a piece now inversing the situation. Imagine that you are the girl and that you are the one giving advice to your parents. What advice do you think you would give them? (if you dont have enough time then this can be assigned as homework)
