A PLEASING COINCIDENT
When we were discussing the content of 8HOURS, we didnt realize that this issue would
focus on environment. But after we had interviewed some companies and organizations, we
had found that they all have had a great concern over environmental issues. And its not a
fashion, but a commitment.
Apparently, the current issue of 8HOURS is green. This is mostly a coincidence, and a
pleasing one, especially when we know that many people and organizations give their utmost
time and effort to perform their duties, help others, and save the world. One of the examples
is Design 103 International, a veteran, award-winning consulting firm of architects and
interior designers, who always incorporates energy-efficient, eco-friendly philosophy into an
architectural design. KASIKORNBANK has also continually developed its own policies, now
meeting international standards. And even local wisdom of used tires, they can be used to
create environmentally-friendly products perfect for modern living.
Rockworth never stops caring about the environment. Rather, we have tried our best to
safeguard it, not because its a trend, but its a determination and a duty as we are a resident
of the world.
Apart from the green stories, 8HOURS also presents many interesting pieces such as the
story of color trends in the world and advice from the director of Thailand Institute of Fashion
Research about how to use trend information wisely. The part II, interesting episode of the
concept behind Rockworths furniture can also be founded in this issue.
I hope that a variety of stories and good deeds in this last issue of 2009 would be
interesting and fulfilling for our readers. I strongly believe that if we do good things, we will
never walk alone.

WORLD TRENDS

KNOW THEM THROUGH AND

THROUGH, AND USE THEM WELL.

OCCASIONALLY, ERRORS OCCUR NOT BECAUSE OF

LACK OF INFORMATION.
The director explains that the research
must clearly state what is in the hype at
the moment and what will happen next. All
these processes are linked in a global
network. Over 40 years, experts from 14
countries led by Italy, France, Germany,
England, Switzerland, Japan, Korea and
China meet twice a year to predict what
the consumers would prefer to buy in the
following couple of years. Then they interpret
their research specifically what kind of
products they would sell.

A lot of people know what the trends are

but still fail because they lack good analysis
and understanding. For instance, they dont
understand what moods or shades of green
should be depicted. If you choose the wrong
shades or match the wrong colors, the
moods will change. But if you understand
how your customers feel, you will be able
to choose the right colors for your products.
The details are very important. You need to
answers what your customers want, not just
what the trends are, he added.

Pradit Ratanawijitrasilpa
Director of Thailand Institute of
Fashion Research

Apart from understanding the concept of

trendsetting, the correct use of trend
information is also crucial.

All product manufacturers want to get their

hands on new trend information. Because
once you get a hold of it, your new products
will be doing a roaring trade.

When you already know what the trends are,

you need to thoroughly analyze them. Trends
are complex. They need a lot of research and
development, said Ratanawijitrasilpa.

Because trend is a result of the consumer

research, its important that the product
manufactures understand and analyze the
trend before putting it into use.

It is a misconception that trendsetters are

those big fashion designers or business
enterprisers. And everyone seems to be
following them, said Pradit Ratanawijitrasilpa,
Director of Thailand Institute of Fashion
Research, the sole Thai representative at
the World Color Trend Conference with
INTERCOLOR Organization.
But after carefully analyzing through the
core of the trends all over the world, we
found that trends are all about in-depth
researching on consumers, current events
and other circumstances based on the
analysts experience.

The trend information will be more useful if

you know how to use it.

Color Trends for Autumn/Winter 2010/11

CLEAN: Shades of natural colors. Bright hues dropped to softer
shades by the foggy shadows of black or white, giving the feeling of
coolness, tranquility and serenity.
MAKE-UP: Mysterious and powerful feelings are reflected on
material surface in a wide range of black, deep brown and different
shades of red. The colors show another side of your emotion.
FILL-UP: Fun, exciting, energetic moods with burnt orange, bright
blue, pink or pinkish purple.

USED TIRES FIND

A HAPPY ENDING

AN OLD TIRE AT A CROSSROADS

TOSS IT OR REUSE IT?
A wise way to save the world is to reduce the amount of trash. The more we stop churning out more
trash, the less pollution there will be.
This is the fact, and it is what we can do to help sustain the
environment. Many countries including Thailand have adopted
recycling systems. Old and useless car tires can be used in making
the asphalt cement for roadwork, roof tiles, tennis court ground or
even childrens playground.
Although recycling is better than reusing in terms of a greater
amount of garbage reduced, the complex technology in the tire
recycling forces the process to be in the far-fetched industrial level.
However, several organizations have been trying to minimize the
amount of used tires in other simpler alternative processes. More
importantly, their endeavors have brought about by-products, which
could be developed for further useful purposes in everyday life.
Here are some examples of such by-products.
Playground Equipments can be seen everywhere. But a variety
of these well-developed equipments come from Michelins Used
Tire Playground Program. This program allows children not only to
play with the equipments but also to learn how these equipments
are made from old tires.

Plant Containers are another creation that has come a long way.
The first generation containers were rounded like the shape of the
tire itself. The new design cuts and stretches a tire to become a
spread-out plant container.
Mosquito Trap made by tires is a folk wisdom from Udon Thani,
Thailand. Mosquitoes naturally look for a place to lay eggs, and
the tires with water inside are a perfect place for them. By using
a wooden board punctured to make a hole and attach it to the net
placed on top of the tire, the mosquitoes will be trapped in the net.
Old tires can be remade into a myriad of many other different things.
These examples are only a few of those considered useful and easy
to make for daily living.
Since our environment is in danger, the only way to reverse such
imminent disaster is to take action, to do something. Who knows?
You may come up with a great idea and create your one-of-its-kind
innovation from your own old tire.

KASIKORN STANDARD
STANDARD BEYOND
EXCELLENCE
WITH THE LONGTIME STANDARD OF
GOOD PRACTICE

everything we do, we do it with

excellence. Thats why we call ourselves
Karin Phoonuan
Kasikorn Groups Construction
Engineering Team Leader

K-EXCELLENCE.

On one hand, its an annoyance that your organization is told to

follow certain rules to meet the international standard although the
organization is already at a higher threshold of your own standard.
On the other hand, many of those certifications and standard work
as a useful means of informing the general public of what and how
each company is operating.
KASIKORNBANK has long been standardizing its own working
method in terms of business, service, society and environment.
KASIKORNBANK, Paholyothin branch was one of the oldest
buildings in Thailand that had big space in front of the building
right next to the street. Back then all big buildings were almost
attached to the footpath to utilize all the space you could have.
But this KASIKORNBANK branch was 40 meters away from the
roadside, recalled Karin Phoonuan, Kasikorn Groups Construction
Engineering Team Leader
Now theres law indicating how far your building has to be away
from the road. But our building was further away from the legal limit,
even before the law was enacted, to give more space to the city and
to return beautiful blue sky to the society. Imagine how suffocating
youd feel looking up in the sky with all those skyscrapers blocking
your view, he said.
Phoonuan expressed how KASIKORNBANK cares about Thai society
since the old days:
We used to only talk about how strong and stable the building
should be, and we never paid attention to energy conservation. But
at the Paholyothin and Ratburana branches, we had incorporated
energy saving long before the law was in effect, or even before
people realized how important energy conservation was.

KASIKORN STANDARDSTANDARD BEYOND EXCELLENCE

The Ratburana headquarters was the first to win the environmental

friendly and energy saving award in the ASEAN level. Weve been
doing this for a long time. This good thing that we do makes us feel
proud. Wed like to call this our BANK Standard, he added.
The latest KASIKORNBANK office on Chaeng Watthana road not
only reinforces the BANK Standard, but also raises the bar of
KASIKORNBANK up even higher.
KASIKORNBANK office on Chaeng Watthana road is part of our
contingency plan. Our facility management team wanted to have
a back-up office to stabilize the service in case of an emergency
such as natural disasters or political upheavals that may paralyze our
system in the main offices. We wanted a place that was distant but
not too far from the city. This location is perfect. The building plan is
also better than other new buildings that place the elevators in the
middle, leaving less available space, he said.
Despite the fact that this building was refurbished from an old
deserted office, the Kasikorn team looks at it as the biggest recycling
effort in its entire history.
We thought about the environment first. Thats why we recycled and
refurbished an old vacant building instead of whipping up a new
construction site. This way we didnt have to bomb the mountains
for concrete. Whatever extra we needed to change also fell under
our environmental friendly concept. And, more importantly, we are
Thailands pioneer in using wood that met the E0 standard because
everything we do, we do it with excellence. Thats why we call
ourselves K-EXCELLENCE.

Interior design has

been developed. In the
past, we thought that
decorating floor, wall
and ceiling could add
value to the space or
could market or build
your brand. But if we
take a deeper look at
interior design, we will
find the answer that
ultimately its about
designing interior
space to meet users
lifestyle needs, said
Worapong Changchat of PIA

DESIGN BEYOND DECORATION

Since the standard of KASIKORNBANK adheres to social and environmental concerns,
Kasikorns Chaeng Watthana, which was designed by PIA, also reinforces the BANK
Standard.
KASIKORNBANK gave us the different benchmarkssuch as numbers of floors and
building gross floor areacustomized to the design goal of the company to make it an
Operational Headquarters. We then brainstormed, mapped and planned the concept,
said Worapong Changchat, Executive Partner of PIA. Most of the office space is
devoted to operational area, so philosophy of space was first to be brought under our
consideration. We tried to make use of the space to the utmost extent. To make it an
interesting office, we turned our focus to an environmentally-design.
PIA paid great attention to interior architecture to make Operational Headquarters
become a place to support social interactions and connections within the office.
Its the connection and combination of interior architecture and interior design ideas.
We created such connection and interaction by designing vertical linkage that needed

12

nothing high tech but could save certain amount of energy. We used
natural lighting from the top surface and the side facade of the building
to supplement electric lighting. We also used platform to connect
different floors, and we created an open space embracing casual
working environment for people to mingle and share ideas, he said.
The design team kept the office in a simple and clean way. But in
some parts such as auditorium or multi-purpose room, the team
adjusted the design to fit for purpose.
Most of the area is for the operational use, so we basically designed
the space for convenience, simplicity and practicality. We chose
simple and appropriate workstations and organized them in a special
way called flat organization. As, by nature, the organization grows,
we adopted flexible option for furniture arrangements and ensured
a functional arrangement of the office area with optimum space
utilization for now and for the future, he said.

KASIKORN STANDARDSTANDARD BEYOND EXCELLENCE

Despite posh workstations, lasting quality and strength are even more
crucial, he said.
This office may be different from other branches where people can
feel and see edgy design and active appeal right away when they
walk in. Rather, for this project, I pay more attention to suitability
criteria and the concept because this is not a showroom, nor an
office, but the Operational Headquarters that plays a vital behindthe-scene role in supporting KASIKORNBANK, he said.
The green project is about absorbing the green value and becoming
the part of it. This green project will even increase its own worth and
be even more progressively important. I believe that the happiness of
the users is the genuine goal of design for quality of life.

DESIGN 103
INTERNATIONAL

AND ITS WORK THAT REFLECTS

IDENTITY, COMMUNITY AND QUALITY

Vol. 09 | Nov 09Jan 10

If architecture is a reflection of society and culture in each era, an

architectural work also portrays a creators attitude and identity.
Design 103 International Company Limited, a one-stop service
consulting and architectural design company, is one of the companies
whose products and style outstandingly reflect the architects identity.
The company is widely recognized from its design, construction and
decoration of Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Thailand.
Design 103 Intl was founded in 1968. A plethora of awards have
been garnered in the past 40 years of successful experience. The
latest award received is Top Ten Green Architecture 2009 given by
BCI Asia to KASIKORNBANK project on Chaeng Watthana road.
This very same project also won Green Architecture 2009 from the
Association of Siam Architects.
We started out small, with only 4-5 employees. Mr. Chatchawal
Pringpuangkeo found this small firm, and back then it was called
Design 103, the number that came from the address number of
the building, said Ramese Kanjanapokin, president of Design 103
International Co., Ltd.

Images Source | Design 103 Intl

Plam Jebel Ali | Dubai | 2006-2007

Mr. Chatchawan wanted this name to reflect teamwork, not any

particular person. In 1996-1997 when the economy plummeted, we
changed our management strategies. From a domestic household
design company, we merged with Royal Haskoning to become an
international group of architectural companies.
Architecture survives because of people and teamwork. And the
company draws together experts in different fields to work in team,
said Kanjanapokin.
Our team works closely with our clients. Objectives, business
possibilities, researches and analyses are all factored into the design
process to give birth to the best work that meets expected quality
and budget within the timeframe given. We also adapt everything to
culture, environment and technology to achieve the best work that
pleases both our customers and our employee, Kanjanapokin said.
The motto of the company is Interior Speaks Out for Exterior. The
company believes that good architectural design must reflect the
identity of the people living inside the building. That also includes

The Cove | Pattaya, Thailand | 2007

the need, value, culture, tradition, technology and other elements to

tell a story of when, where and for whom this particular piece of
valuable architecture is created.
We are competitive in the international market, not only because
our design is on par with international standard, but also because
we can control our cost in Thailand where living expenses are more
reasonable. However, we also need to invest in staff and software,
and adapt our design to meet the culture and lifestyle of each
country were working for, so that we can create and deliver our best
work, Kanjanapokin said.

Medina Centrale, at the Pearl | Doha, Qatar | 2007-present

With thoughtful design philosophy and great emphasis on social

context of each setting, Design 103 Intl has been rapidly growing.
From a tiny office with only a handful of employees, Design 103 Intl
has now proven to be a world-class architecture firm.

BEING AWARE OF WHAT

YOU EAT BRIGHTENS
YOUR DAY INDEED
PEOPLE NEED DIFFERENT KINDS AND
AMOUNTS OF NUTRIENTS, SO BE SELECTIVE.
You are what you eat is a classic expression for people of all ages.
The first thing one should keep in mind is being selective of what
to consume because subsequently it will bring about a healthier
lifestyle among other things. Here are the guidelines for working
people to work more effectively and refrain from falling asleep after
a meal.
To get your day off to a healthy start, eat breakfast. Breakfast is
crucial in balancing the sugar level in your bloodstream. High protein
and low-fat food such as eggs, whole wheat bread, yogurt or milk
are recommended.
Lunch should give you a boost of energy and nutrients you need to
complete the tasks at hand throughout the afternoon. Protein rich
foods such as meat, eggs, tofu, beans and vegetables will stimulate
your brain chemicals, making you feel alert and active. Brown rice
is preferred to white rice because it is richer in nutrients and fibers,
and it gives you more energy throughout the day. When you have a
good balance of sugar in your bloodstream, your body will not be
easily exhausted.
Try to avoid deep-fried or stir-fried dishes or those food items that
are high in fat such as cheese, margarine or butter. This type of
diet is filled with high calories and your body needs a great amount
of energy to digest. Consequently, you feel lethargic after a hard
digestion. In part, it is also responsible for a higher dose of stress
hormones induced in your body.
If your work requires continuous brain activities, salmon or tuna is
highly recommended. These fish are rich in Omega 3, one of the
best brain foods to energize your brain cells and help enhance
neurotransmission.

Those who work with data and require a lot of memorizing, the diets
abundant with choline in brown rice, corn or green vegetables are
recommended.
Rich multivitamins and minerals in vegetables or fruit juices can
always refresh your body. Strawberries are proven to help develop
the learning part of your brain and its muscles; however, no sugar
should be added. Whole fruit blends like smoothies are better than
squeezed juice because they give a vaster quantity of nutrients. Also,
you should not sip the juice slowly because the acid in the juice will
rot your teeth, and that will result in tooth decay.
So in your lunchtime today, choose your lunch wisely and feel
freshly all day long!!

Last issue we gave you a glimpse on how to design the file cabinets
based on the idea of office space management. In this issue, we
focus on how important it is to design each piece of office furniture
by following the Human Space Technology philosophy to
emphasize the changes in working behavior.
We can categorize a design into two groups: office furniture for a
regular use and a temporary occasion. The first refers to furniture
such as office workstation that is used daily and requires less
movement for long working hours. So we have to make it strong
and stable to serve a user with the highest amount of comfort, said
product designer Thapakorn Sujaritapirak.
The latter is the design of furniture for temporary use such as
furniture for conference and seminar. We have to create furniture
with effective storage solutions and flexible mobility when space
is limited. And the furniture is not only well-structured, but also
compliments the design with safety and high ergonomic standards
of comfort.

TIPS
Good design products contain a good combination of function and aesthetics. And LiNK is one of them. A practical and stylish folding
table, LiNK can be easily switched and folded while maintaining proper weight and perfect balance of the table.
Before each product is designed, designers have to investigate and analyze in all aspects to assure that the product is innovative, well
designed, and highly functional.
