Arnold Worldwide There's one (hyphenated) phrase for Joel, "crazy-deranged ad geek." His sense of initiative, eagerness and humor set him apart from all others in account management. He always takes it upon himself to learn the business he works on (CFP) inside and out, the category and trends within the ad industry. He's empathetic to client requests, but is learning how to balance them with creative recommendations/perspectives. Joel is wholesome and I'm proud to have called him my colleague. Joel never takes a reactionary role - rather, he is always at the forefront and is constantly coming up with new ideas and making new connections. As the Deputy Press Secretary for the Student Government Association, I had the opportunity to assist Joel with his responsibilities as Press Secretary. Rather than just assigning me tasks, he gave me the opportunity to take a leadership role for certain things that came within my area of expertise. Joel fostered efficient collaborative relationships with each of these groups. He worked to increase media coverage, reaching out to both college and local news outlets while also creating partnerships on campus. University of Maryland I have worked with Joel in two capacities: we organized an event on campus, bringing together the American Marketing Association and Student Government Association; we also worked together as Resident Assistants at the University of Maryland. While working with Joel I have seen his unique dedication and passion for his work firsthand. Always up for a new challenge, Joel finds true joy in accomplishing success in a project. Because the nature of our work is so team-oriented, Joel is first to recognize that no success is an individual effort, and to that end he is always first to praise key members of the team and encourage others to work as a cohesive unit to reach a common goal, a mature and refined practice that is rare to find in college students. More recently I have had the pleasure to see Joel's passion for the advertising/marketing industry. His analysis of advertisements, brand strategy and consumer insight is an astounding breed of classroom knowledge and intuition. The Diamondback Although Joel was not a journalism major in college, the commitment to ethical, fact-based journalism that he developed during his time at The Diamondback was more genuine than most. While his work ethic as a copy editor and later an opinion columnist was admirable, Joel's greatest quality is his desire to learn. He never hesitated to engage editors in conversation about how things could be done better or ask for advice on matters when he knew others had more experience.
