CONCERTO — RHAPSODY (1995-96)
For Solo Viola and Small Orchestra
DAVID JOHNSTONECONCERTO — RHAPSODY (1995-96)
For Solo Viola and Small Orchestra
DAVID JOHNSTONI
The Concerto — Rhapsody for Solo Viola Orchestra is a continuous
musical work in a single movement, in the best English orchestral
tradition of Vaughan Williams or Finzi. It is loosely in sonata
form, arching upwards in its centre part, before very gradually by
gradually coming to rest in the serene final bars. It lasts for
roughly 14 minutes, though very flexible tempos might be used by
different artists.
The concerto is not specifically a virtuoso work, though there are
many difficult parts appropriate only for professional or competent
violists. The soloist does shine very prominently, and every
possible register is used in a very balanced manner. This is
especially apparent in the long, almost cadenza-type passages
towards the close of the work.
‘The orchestration is for string orchestra and two horns, However,
the two horns may be omitted if wished, and for smaller string
sections of, say, less than 6-6-4-4-2, the horns are in fact best not
used so as not to destabilize the sound balance, though the
composer leaves this point to personal preference.
The first performance was given on 25 April 1996 in Pamplona,
Spain, by the Pablo Sarasate Orchestra, with Liitz Kuhne as viola
soloist, and the concert conducted by Luis Aguirre. The work is
dedicated to Nicolas Garbari, for many years associated with the
Santa Cecilia Orchestra (which was to became the Pablo Sarasate
Orchestra).CONCERTO = RHAPSODY maid v,
