Abstract

Many individuals are more likely to disclose personal information about themselves online, rather than in person. Often times, disclosing information in person can create more anxiety and pressure for people. When information is shared online, the sharer is unable to see the receivers direct reaction and response. Also, the information that is being shared is capable to be more thought out and planned than speaking face to face. When people feel more comfortable and secure with the means through which they are sharing their information, then more personal information will be disclosed. This is possible through many types of online communication including social media such as Facebook, Twitter, personal blogs, and instant messaging. This paper will investigate the reasons why people might prefer to share personal information online and the effect that the information shared has on the receiver. Through questionnaires, participants will be asked to discuss their preference to disclose their information through an online medium or face-to-face.
