The title of the painting is saint-lazare station and the pont
de l’Europe. I have compared this with the painting pont de l’Europe by Gustave Caillebotte as they are both of the same railway but from different prospectives. This is not a one off painting by monet as he repainted this image many times. I think Monet chose to paint this picture as Railways were a major symbol of modern life back in those days and also were considered the “new cathedrals of France”, Also I feel he painted this picture because he believed in painting every day objects. Railways were also very popular to writers and even composers. The movement that monet belonged to were called the impressionists and were given this name in the 19th century around 1870 and were based in Paris. The artists that belonged to this group all believed that artists should paint ordinary, everyday objects that could be observed by anyone around the city. The other members of this movement were Frederic Bazille, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Berth morisot, Camille Pissarro , Pierre-auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley.
