PREFACE
Manta is designed to be flexible and expandable making it ideal for use in Integrated Bridge Systems (IBS), as well as for standalone Radar Systems and Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS). When used in standalone systems the Manta Display is dedicated for use as either a Radar Display or as an ECDIS Display. When used in Integrated Bridge Systems the Manta Display can be configured as a networked Multi-Functional Display, which can be switched between different functions, e.g. Radar, ECDIS or Conning Display, depending on the function required by the operator. This allows a single display to control a number of functions, although only one function can be accessed at any time. Manta is designed so that, when required, the displays can be controlled from an Ergopod. The operation, installation and maintenance of Manta is covered in the following manuals: KH2024 - System Manual for the Manta Networked Multi-Functional Display. This covers the operation, installation and maintenance of the Manta display when used as a networked multi-functional display. The content of this manual is limited to the functions specific to the networked multi-functional display, and does not cover features common to the Radar and ECDIS Systems. KH2026 - System Manual for the Manta Radar Systems. This covers operation, installation and maintenance of the Manta Radar System, including the displays and radars. This provides all the information required for standalone radar systems, and for the networked multi-functional display in radar mode. KH2027 - System Manual for the Manta ECDIS Displays. This covers operation, installation and maintenance of the Manta ECDIS system. This provides all the information required for standalone ECDIS systems, and for the networked multi-functional display in ECDIS mode.

Radar Plotting Aids are described in Operating Information, Chapters 2 and 3. The Manta series of displays provide the following operational facilities, with three types of radar plotting

The Manta Radar systems can be configured to suit customer requirements, according to the quantity and types of display, transmitter/receiver and Interswitch unit used. Typical configurations are shown in the Figures at the end of this Introduction. The comprehensive use of colour, provides an optimum display of radar picture, selectable functions, warnings, target information and Ownship navigation data. 3 The Manta series equipment is designed for use as either a panel mounted Console or a Desk Mounted Display with a separate Processor Unit. 4

OPERATION
Manta colour Radar Displays utilise a unique method of operation. The entire operation of the radar (apart from power ON/OFF switching) can be controlled by using the trackerball and the three pushbutton keys located on a specially designed and ergonomic control unit, featuring a contoured hand rest. 5 The operation of the Manta range of radars is designed to be simple and intuitive. A cursor is moved by the trackerball inside and outside the radar circle. When the cursor is moved to be within the confines of a Status Box (located outside the radar circle) the box is automatically highlighted; pop-down boxes provide abbreviated pushbutton functionality. Simultaneously, function options are displayed as a labelled diagrammatic view of the three pushbuttons in the Pushbutton Selection Box. The functions are accessed by pressing the appropriate pushbutton. The Status Box changes to display the new status and the cursor can then be moved back to the radar circle or to another function box. 6 When the cursor is inside the radar circle, the three buttons are used for plotting targets, positioning markers and mapping graphics. A diagrammatic labelled view of the pushbutton functionality is displayed in the pushbutton selection box. 7 Where the operator requires discrete controls for Gain, Sea, Rain, Range Up, Range Down, VRM, EBL, Parallel Index and Vector mode functions, these can be provided by the optional Radar Control Panel. This unit can be mounted in Desk Mounted Displays, but is a separate unit when Console Mounted Displays are used. 8 9 Detailed Operating Information is Operating Information, Chapter 1. provided in

MAPPING
The mapping facility has a capacity of 350kbytes used in a flexible partition arrangement. Maps can be ground stabilised in any mode using a reference target, or by external position fixing systems (e.g. GPS). 13 14 The maps are stored on internal non-volatile Flash memory.

KH 2026, Introduction
RADAR PLOTTING AIDS
Electronic Plotting Aid (EPA)
The Electronic Plotting Aid (EPA) is a manual plotting system equivalent to, but superior than, a reflection plotter. Up to 20 targets can be plotted in all display modes. EPA is fitted to all Relative and True Motion display systems. 40 The operator manually selects and enters target plots, and at regular intervals updates the plots by entering the new position of the targets. 41 42 Refer to Chapter 2 of the Operating Information section for a full description of EPA facilities.

SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS
The Manta System can be configured in a number of different ways. Typical examples are shown in the figures at the end of this Introduction. 49 The control and status interface between the Displays and the Transceivers is either via a parallel connection, using 38-core cable, or via a CAN bus interface, using 12-core composite cable. The MkIV, MkV and MkVI transceivers can only use the parallel interface, whereas the MkVII transceivers can use either parallel or CAN bus interfaces, depending on system requirements. 50 Note that the Radar Interswitch Unit (RIU) can only use the CAN bus interface, with an option of a parallel to CAN bus adaptor on a limited number of transceiver interfaces only. If a Radar Interswitch Unit is used with additional non-MkVII transceivers, a Transmitter Interface Unit (TIU) is required for each of the other non-MkVII transceivers to convert the signals between parallel and CAN bus formats. 51 Note that all the examples, with one exception, show the Desk Mounted Display. However the Desk, Console or Flush Console Mounted Display can be used with any configuration. 52 53 The typical configurations shown are as follows: (1) A single Desk Top Display and a dedicated Upmast Transmitter/Receiver and Antenna, with a parallel interface. (2) A single Console Mounted Display, with Remote Trackerball, and a dedicated Downmast Transmitter/Receiver and Antenna, with a CAN bus interface. (3) Two Desk Top Displays Interswitched via a Radar Interswitch Unit ( RIU) to two Upmast Transmitter/Receivers and Antennas, with parallel interfaces. (4) Two Desk Top Displays interswitched via a Dual Interswitch Unit (DIU) to one Transmitter/Receiver and Antenna, with a parallel interface. (5) Two Desk Top Displays interswitched via a Radar Interswitch Unit ( RIU) to two Upmast Transmitter/Receivers and Antennas, one with the internal CAN bus to parallel adaptor, and one with a Transmitter Interface Unit. (6) Two Desk Top Displays interswitched via a Dual Interswitch Unit ( DIU) to two Upmast Transmitter/Receivers and Antennas, with parallel interfaces. The Manta Radar System can be supplied with an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which uses internal batteries to maintain power to the Radar System in the event of mains failure. Information on the UPS is provided in Chapter 6 of the System Information section. 54

Automatic Tracking Aid (ATA)

The Automatic Tracking Aid (ATA) is based on the ARPA system and offers 20 target capacity. Trial manoeuvre, target history and automatic acquisition are excluded from the ATA facility. ATA performance is fully compliant with IMO requirements. 43 44 45 The ATA utilises a computer which employs advanced processing techniques to track targets automatically. Refer to Chapter 3 of the Operating Information section for a full description of ATA facilities.

Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA)

The Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) facility complies with and exceeds the IMO requirements for an Automatic Radar Plotting aid. Up to 50 targets can be acquired (automatically or manually) and tracked. 46 47 48 T he ARPA Manoeuvres. includes Simulations and T rial

Refer to Chapter 3 of the Operating Information section for a full description of ARPA facilities.

KH 2026, Introduction
TECHNICAL OVERVIEW
The basic Manta Radar consists of a Manta Display and associated Radar Processor Unit, together with Radar Transceivers/Antennas and Interface Units as required. A typical schematic is shown in Figure 10. This shows one Display/Processor Unit and one Transceiver/Antenna with an interface unit, with the option to connect t o other transceivers/antennas and display/processor units via the interface unit. 55 Depending on the system configuration, single phase mains power for the Transceiver/Antenna may be supplied from the Processor Unit, or directly from the ships mains supply. Where a Transceiver/Antenna requires 3 phase supplies, these are supplied directly from ships mains. 56 An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) may be used on the single phase mains supplies to maintain power to the Display/Processor Unit and Transceiver/Antenna in the event of a loss of ships mains. Note that the batteries in the UPS will only maintain supplies for a limited period. 57 The cable used for the PS2 interface must generally be less than 3 metres long, in order to meet the specification for the interface. In systems where it is necessary to separate the display and processor by greater than 3 metres, the optional Remote Display Transceiver may be installed at both ends of the link. This unit converts the PS2 link to and from RS485 format thus allowing a greater separation of the display and associated processor unit. The Remote Display Transceiver, if fitted, is usually located within the Radar Processor Unit and the Desk Top Display, but is mounted remotely from the Console Mounted and Flush Console Mounted Displays and is connected to the remote trackerball. 61 When fitted, the optional Radar Control Panel is either located in the Desk Top Display or separately console mounted as a remote unit for the Console and Flush Console Mounted Displays. A further option allows the Radar Control Unit to be hand held with a flying lead connection to the console. When used the Radar Control Panel is connected to the Radar Processor Unit via an RS232 link. 62 When the Radar Control Panel is used the trackerball can be connected to the PS2 port on the Radar Control Panel, which then combines the signals to and from the trackerball with the local control signals to provide a single RS232 connection to the Radar Processor Unit. There is then no PS2 connection between the display and the processor unit. Therefore, when the display and processor unit are more than 3 metres apart there is no need for a Remote Display Transceiver if the Radar Control Panel is fitted, as the interface is via an RS232 link. 63

KH 2026, Introduction
Radar Processor Unit
70 Three basic versions of Radar Processor Unit are available: (1) Radar Processor Unit with Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) NNR-A59 (2) Radar Processor Unit with Automatic Tracking Aid (ATA) NNR-A60 (3) Radar Processor Unit with Electronic Plotting Aid (EPA) NNR-A61 NOTE: When optional items are fitted into the Processor Unit, the identity will be given a suffix to identify the additional items fitted. The Radar Processor Unit controls the designated master radar transceiver/antenna and receives status signals from the transceiver. It processes the video from the transceiver for application to the display in VGA format. For slave displays, the status of the transceiver may be sent to the display, but the transceiver/antenna control lines are disabled. 71 72 The master transceiver/antenna can be controlled by one of the following types of interface: (1) An parallel link, using discrete connections for each of the control and status lines. (2) A CAN bus link, where all the control and status signals with the exception of sync, azimuth and heading line from the transceiver are multiplexed onto a single CAN bus. The Radar Processor Unit provides the interface to external equipment. The following standard interfaces are provided: 73 (1) Analogue gyro compass input. (2) Analogue speed log input. (3) Four configurable NMEA serial interfaces are provided. These are opto-isolated from the internal circuitry of the Radar Processor Unit. All four interfaces can be configured for RS232 operation, serial input 4 can also be configured for RS422 operation. GPS is normally input on one of the serial ports. NOTE: Serial port 3 is configured to output diagnostic data and therefore this port should be used for receive signals only. The other three ports can be used with bi-directional serial data. (4) Relay isolated outputs are provided for visual, audible and fail alarms. (5) RS232 link to external Trackerball/Ergopod. This link is receive only from the Trackerball/Ergopod.

Radar Transceivers/Antennas
74 The following types of Kelvin Hughes Radar Transceivers/Antennas can be used with Manta: (1) MkIV, which is available in an Upmast 25 kW X-Band configuration, with low speed antenna only. This transceiver/antenna requires single phase mains only. (2) MkV, which is available in an Upmast 10 kW X-Band configuration with low or high speed antennas. This transceiver/antenna requires DC power only. For the low speed antenna this is normally supplied from the processor unit, for the high speed antenna it is supplied from a separate power supply unit. (3) MkVI, which is available in an Upmast 30 kW S-Band configuration with low or high speed antennas. This transceiver/antenna requires 3 phase mains supplies, which are supplied by a soft start unit. The soft start unit ensures that excessive torque is not applied to the antenna at start up. (4) MkVII S-Band, which is available in a Downmast 30 kW configuration with low or high speed antennas. This transceiver/antenna requires single phase and 3 phase mains. The single phase mains is used to drive the transceiver and the 3 phase mains is used to drive the antenna turning mechanism. The 3 phase mains is supplied via a soft start unit, which ensures that excessive torque is not applied to the antenna at start up. (5) MkVII X-Band, which is available in a Downmast 25 kW configuration with low or high speed antennas. This transceiver/antenna requires single phase mains only. The transceiver provides the DC supplies for the turning mechanism. NOTE: Low speed antennas normally rotate at 25 rpm and high speed antennas at 40 rpm. 75 T he Kelvin Hughes MkIV, M kV and MkVI transceivers/antennas can only be interfaced to the Radar Processor Unit via the parallel control lines. They do not have the CAN bus interface fitted. The Kelvin Hughes MkVII transceiver/antenna can be interfaced to the Radar Processor Unit either by the parallel control lines or by the CAN bus link. Normally, the CAN bus interface is used as it reduces the amount of wiring required. 76 If the Radar Interswitch Unit (RIU) is used to interface the Radar Processor Unit to the transceivers/antennas the interconnections to the RIU must be via CAN bus interfaces. W hen the M kIV, MkV and MkVI transceivers/antennas are used with the RIU an Interface PCB is required to convert the control and status signals between parallel format and CAN bus format. This Interface PCB may be located in the RIU or may be in a separate Transmitter Interface Unit (TIU). 77

KH 2026, Introduction
Interface Units
78 79 The interface units are fully described in the System Information section. The following main Interface Units are used with Manta: (1) Dual Interswitch Unit (DIU), which provides a means of interconnecting any two displays with any two transceivers, and providing control facilities to enable either display to control either transceiver. (2) Radar Interswitch Unit (RIU), which provides an interface between up to 6 displays and 6 transceivers/antennas. Displays 5 and 6 can be configured to provide radar signals to any slave display or to a Kelvin Hughes ECDIS. The RIU uses the CAN bus interface only, so where the transceiver/antenna requires an parallel interface, either an internally mounted Interface PCB is required, or the transceiver must be interfaced to the RIU via the Transmitter Interface Unit. (3) Transmitter Interface Unit (TIU), which provides an interface t o M kIV, MkV and MkVI transceivers/antennas and large interswitched systems. The TIU converts parallel control and status signals from the transceiver to CAN bus format for the RIU and Radar Processor Unit. (4) Ergopod, allowing control of the radar to be undertaken remotely. (5) Uninterruptible Power Supply, which maintains the power to up to one display and one transceiver/antenna in the event of short term ships mains failure. (6) Remote Display Transceiver, used where the Display and Processor Unit are more than 3 metres apart. (7) Manta Radar Control Panel, which can be used instead of the trackerball and pushbuttons, when required for operational reasons. 80 The following are provided to allow the Manta to interface to a wide variety of equipment: (1) 3-phase transformer, allowing Manta to be used with 440 V 3-phase supplies. (2) Low ratio compass kit, allowing Manta to interface with synchro compasses with ratios between 1:1 and 128:1. (3) Master/slave kit, allowing Manta to interface two transceivers, one as allocated as master to the display and the other as slave to the display. (4) Slave Synchro PCB used where the slave radar provides a synchro or resolver azimuth output. The PCB converts the signal into azimuth pulses and produces a heading line pulse for the display. (5) Divide by 4 PCB, allowing Manta to interface to non-Kelvin Hughes transceivers with an azimuth ratio of 1024:1, and no separate heading line pulse. (6) Buffer amplifiers to amplify the video and sync signals when long cable runs are used between the display and transceiver.
