Welcome to NURETH-14
The 14th Internation Topical Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Thermalhydraulics
Welcome to Toronto for the 14th annual topical meeting on nuclear reactor thermalhydraulics, NURETH-14. The NURETH series of conferences continues to be the outstanding international technical forum for the participants to further their knowledge base by being exposed to and exchange opinions and ideas on different topics related to thermalhydraulics and nuclear reactor safety. At NURETH-14 you are in the company of an international group of leading practitioners and academic and industry researchers engaged in engineering and scientific work focused on nuclear reactor thermalhydraulics. This is the only major conference series devoted solely to the advancement of knowledge in the nuclear reactor thermalhydraulics field. This years theme is Helping the Environment with Advances in Thermalhydraulics and the Conference focuses on how nuclear energy is delivering safe and sustainable solutions to the energy and environmental challenges that we face today. For example, it is helping to ensure greater security of energy supply, to minimize the effects of global warming and climate change, and to maintain competitive electricity prices for consumers all over the world. At the same time, the nuclear industry continues to deliver safe and effective operation of power plants. Since the first meeting in 1980, the Thermalhydraulics Division (THD) of the American Nuclear Society has sponsored NURETH meetings held in the USA, France, Germany, Japan, and Korea. Thirteen meetings have been held so far, in: Saratoga Springs, USA (1980), Santa Barbara, USA (1983), Newport, USA (1985), Karlsruhe, Germany (1989), Salt Lake City, USA (1992), Grenoble, France (1993), Saratoga Springs, USA (1995), Kyoto, Japan (1997), San Francisco, USA (1999), Seoul, Korea (2003), Avignon, France (2005), Pittsburgh, USA (2007), and Kanazawa, Japan (2009). NURETH-14 is organized by the Canadian Nuclear Society in cooperation with the Thermalhydraulics Division of the American Nuclear Society, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, along with many co-sponsoring organizations from the Canadian and the international nuclear communities. On behalf of the Technical Program Committee, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the authors as well as to all the participants who have come all the way to Toronto in spite of the fact that most countries are still recovering from the economic downturn. The technical program consists of approximately 430 papers, which will be delivered in four and a half days starting from Monday, September 26th through Friday, September 30th 2011. NURETH-14 is happy to announce that a total of 632 abstracts and more than 560 draft papers were submitted earlier this year, from which the final manuscripts were accepted for presentation after a thorough double-blind peer review. This large number of papers indicates the strong interest in this major conference. In addition, a number of preconference professional development workshops, plenary sessions, keynote lectures, mini symposia and special topical sessions have been arranged. Not to mention that the Gallery of Thermalhydraulics Phenomena will continuously run the stream of original images and videos of experiments and computational simulations. NURETH-14 is a unique opportunity for researchers and practitioners in the field to present results of their work and to discuss challenges and new ideas with attendees. Here I would like to thank all the reviewers, Track, Session and Panel Organizers as well as to Session Chairs and CoChairs for their time and commitment to maintaining the high quality of the NURETH technical program. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to the members of the Local Organizing Committee, Technical Program Committee, International Steering Committee and the Conference Chairs and Co-Chairs. Without their contribution, NURETH-14 would not have been possible. Finally, I hope that all participants will find NURETH-14 useful for their work, as well as for their personal and professional development, and that the time spent in Toronto will prove very enjoyable. NURETH-14 is looking forward to fruitful technical exchanges between participants from 30 countries from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Oceania Islands. I am confident that our whole professional community shares the same believe that NURETH will continue to shape technology in the nuclear power industry on a truly global basis. Jovica R Riznic, PhD., P.Eng., FASME Technical Program Chair

The 14th International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Thermalhydraulics

General Information
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto is the provincial capital of the province of Ontario, and is the largest city in Canada. Toronto is located in southern Ontario on the northern shore of Lake Ontario. It is the 5th most populated city in North America with a population of more than 2.5 million. Toronto's population is one of the most diverse in the world. Nearly all of the world's culture groups are represented in Toronto and more than 100 languages and dialects are spoken. Toronto was created on March 6, 1834, when the settlement of York was renamed Toronto (which may have been derived from the Huron Indian word for "meeting place" or "land of plenty"). The British settlement of York was founded as the capital of the new province of Upper Canada by Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe in the 1790s and had grown to 10,000 people by the 1830s.

Entry Formalities (Passport and Visa)

A valid travel document, such as a passport is mandatory and a visa may be required. For additional information regarding entry formalities and visas, please visit the website for Citizenship and Immigration Canada at www.cic.gc.ca. You can also consult with your nearest Canadian Embassy, High Commission, Consulate, Customs agent or your travel agent. You should allow a minimum of 30 days for visa delivery.

First Aid
In the event of a medical emergency, please go directly to the Registration desk. Alternatively, the hotel front desk will provide assistance.

Health Insurance
Visitors are NOT covered by the Canadian Health Insurance Plan. It is therefore recommended that participants arrange their own health and accident coverage. This can be done before leaving home through a local travel agent or medical association.

Climate
Torontos climate is moderate for Canada owing to its southerly location within the country. It has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold winter. Owing to urbanization and its proximity to water, Toronto has a fairly low diurnal temperature range (day-night temperature difference). Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with generally mild or cool temperatures with alternating dry and wet periods. The average yearly precipitation is about 830 mm (32.7 in), with an average annual snowfall of about 133 cm (52 in). Toronto experiences an average of 2,038 sunshine hours, or 44% of daylight hours, varying between a low of 27% in December to 59% in July.

Letter of Invitation
The Conference will be pleased to send an official letter of invitation to any attendee making such a request. It is understood that such an invitation is intended to help potential attendees obtain travel funds or a visa. The letter does not constitute any financial commitment on the part of the conference. Please send your request to nureth14@cns-snc.ca .
