Department of Electrical & Electronics, MIT Manipal ELE 305: Communication Systems Assignment 1 (27-08-2011) Date of Submission: 13-09-11

1. Differentiate between pass band communication and base communication. 2. DSBSC modulated signal is demodulated by applying it to a coherent detector. Evaluate the effect of a frequency error f in the local carrier frequency of the detector, measured with respect to the carrier frequency of the incoming DSBSC signal. 3. Calculate the percentage power saving when carrier and one of the sidebands are suppressed in an AM wave modulated to a depth of 100 and 50 %. 4. Frequency translation helps in reducing size of antenna. With the help of illustration discuss about the statement. 5. Write short notes on OSI layers. 6. Consider a nonlinear device with the transfer characteristics y(t)= x(t) + 0.1 x3(t). Explain this device can be used to provide amplitude modulator. 7. Discuss about the transfer function of vestigial sideband shaping filter in detail. 8. Compare the AM techniques 9. Explain the characteristics of White noise 10. Determine the range of capacitor value in an envelope detector circuit with the following specifications: fc = 1MHz, fm = 540KHz, R= 1k 11. Explain frequency discrimination method of SSB and sketch its spectrum. 12. For the system shown below in fig.1, find the spectrum of y(t).

The mixer circuit present in a super heterodyne receiver translates the carrier frequency fc to a fixed IF of 455khz by using a local oscillator of frequency flo .the broadcast band frequencies range from 540 to 1600 kHz. Then determine the range of tuning that must be provided in the local oscillator a) when flo > fc b) when flo < fc
