EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT ANALYSIS, DESIGN AND
DETAILING OF A FOUR STOREY REINFORCED
CONCRETE BUILDING
Detailed design of a four storey office building is presented in this
supplement. The building is having a symmetric plan based on a
regular grid pattern. Such buildings are known to have better
earthquake resistance compared to irregular buildings. Design and
detailing of all the components: slab, beams, columns, foundation
and staircase is presented. Capacity design concepts have been
used to ensure that
1. in no case the beams fail in shear,
2. The columns do not yield before beams,
3. Columns do not fail in shear arising from beam moment capacities.
The building being symmetric about both the axes and having a
regular grid pattern, individual frames in each direction can be
analysed independently as plane frames. Alternatively the building
can be modelled as a space frame with due consideration to rigid
floor movements. The analysis has been carried out by a standard
computer program COSMOS-M but it can be also done by any other
standard computer programme on a personnel computer.
The building is considered to be located in Seismic Zone IV. The wind
forces on the building have been worked out for the maximum wind
speed prevailing in country i.e. 55 m/s and found to be smaller than
the earthquake forces for the present building. These results are not
presented here. Similarly the forces in the members due to
earthquake along the longer dimension of the building are much
smaller compared to those due to earthquake along the smaller
dimension.
