Introduction
Light vehicle engine systems
This chapter is an introduction to light vehicle engine systems, components and operation. This chapter is designed to provide your learners with all the knowledge and practical skills they will need to understand and work safely at this level. It is an area which learners find interesting but challenging as well. This chapter covers all the main components used in both spark ignition (petrol) and compression ignition (diesel) engines. It will introduce the learners to the basic operating principles of light vehicle engine mechanical, lubrication, cooling, ignition, fuel and exhaust systems. Within the learning resources for this chapter you will find a variety of activities including some specifically designed animations to help make the more complex areas of the learning easier to deliver and understand. The scheme of work is based on a 15 week programme of 4 hours a week but you may wish to rearrange this to suit your learner need and the needs of your centre.
Chapter content
This chapter will cover the following topic areas:
Work safely on light vehicle engine systems Petrol and diesel engine systems Spark ignition and compression ignition engines Liquid cooling and lubrication systems Fuel systems Exhaust systems Routine engine maintenance Environmental considerations
