ISA Testing
IMPORTANT ISA TESTING INFORMATION!
On October 4th and 5th, the students of SIS Elementary will be taking part in the ISA (International Schools Assessment) testing. ISA is an international standardized test taken by many students around the world. Our students will be part of a very large group being tested in many subject areas such as Math, Reading and Writing. This is not a test of your childs worth, character or future potential. It is a tool for the school and teachers to guide our instruction and give direction to our curriculum. Encourage your child to do their best; but, please do not put so much pressure on them to be the best in the class that they become too stressed and cannot focus on the task at hand.

Remember, a stressed out, tired and hungry student does not make a good test taker!

Our Class Aug. 11

Ms. R.

We will be doing some practice tests in class so that students are familiar with the test for- mat and the types of questions asked. This is not a test that can be studied for! However, there are some things that you can do to help your son/ daughter perform their best on the days of testing: First, please be sure that your child gets a good nights sleep both nights before testing! (see article on next page). Second, be sure that your child eats a full and healthy breakfast the mornings of testing - growling stomachs are very distracting when trying to concentrate on a test. Third, there will be no homework on the evenings of testing, please do not ll up this time with other work, but rather allow your child to take

advantage of this to relax and get to bed early. Finally, make sure you are not too stressed about the test either!

Thank you

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful parents of 3D who came to help make Chuseok a fun time for the class! The masks were a fantastic idea and the students did a great job decorating them. Please be sure to check out pictures from the fun on the Pictures and Videos page here on our Weebly class site.

Sleep and your child

SLEEP DEPRIVATION IN CHILDREN Sleep deprivation is a particular problem for children. In studies of elementary aged children, nearly 40% had some type of sleep problem, 15% exhibited bedtime resistance and 10% had daytime sleepiness. Nearly half of teens reported at least occasional difculty in falling or staying asleep and almost 13% experiencing chronic and severe insomnia. This lack of sleep greatly affects mood, behavior, and academic performance. In pediatric research, poor sleep- ers reported being signicantly more depressed and were even more likely to have a negative self-image. They were also more likely to exhibit type A behavior patterns and inferior coping behaviors and have more behavioral problems at home and in school. One study showed that students with Cs, Ds and Fs went to bed an average of 40 minutes later and got 20 minutes less sleep than A students. Insufcient sleep has also been associated with Attention Decit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), lower social skills and learning difculties. - excerpt from www.sleepdex.org an on-line journal about sleep related issues.
