Public Policy through the Lens of Various Disciplines


SPEAKER PROFESSOR BARBARA HARRISS-WHITE Emeritus Professor of Development Studies Director, South Asia Research Cluster, Wolfson College University of Oxford

Barbara Harriss-White is a political-economist and a field-economist. Her research interests have developed from the economics of agricultural markets to India's socially regulated capitalist economy and corporate capital; and from the malnutrition caused by markets to many other aspects of deprivation: notably poverty, gender bias and gender relations, health and disability, destitution and caste discrimination. She has a long term interest in agrarian change in S. India and has also tracked the economy of a market town there since 1972. Her present work is trying to explore various aspects of political ecology and regimes of energy consumption and utilisation. Barbara was awarded the Edgar Graham Prize for her book Rural Commercial Capital and the Left Front (published by OUP, India). She was the founderdirector of Oxford's MPhil in Development Studies (1995) and Director of Queen Elizabeth House (now also known as Dept of International Development), 2007-11; founder of Oxford's MSc in Contemporary India, first Director of the Contemporary South Asian Studies Programme, School of Area Studies; Director of Queen Elizabeth House (now also known as Dept of International Development). 2007-11; founder of Oxford's MSc in Contemporary India, first Director of the Contemporary South Asian Studies Programme, School of Area Studies. A trustee of ActionAid for many years, she currently serves on the boards of IFPRI; SOAS, London University; and the S Asia Institute Heidelberg. She is a member of the Campaign against Climate Change Trade Union branch's Commission on a million jobs which reduce CO2.
