1. Background information - The story is set between 1968 and 1998 in Northern Ireland and Canada - There were two social groups: the Loyalists (Protestants), The Republicans (Catholics) - Declans dad was killed by the IRA, his mom and sister died in as a result of a bomb explosion - So he joined the group the Holy Terrors to wreak revenge for their death 2. Summary of the Story - thirteen year old Declan lives in Belfast, Northern Ireland - One day he was caught by the police - He is sent to Canada to his uncle Mathew, his aunt Kate and their children Ana and Thomas - But he wants to go back to Belfast to fight against the Prods - He designates his uncle as a coward because he runs away from the war -On Christmas Mathew and Kate have to take him to the airport that he can fly back to Belfast - But he remembers the Time in Canada-> he doesnt want to lose his family so he runs out the airplane to stay with his new family 3. Focus on: 3.1 the beginning: - Very emotional, gripping and informative (a lot of thoughts and vivid explanations) 3.2 the end: - Unexpected end because actually Declan seems to want to go back to Belfast till the end a typical incident: His tongue was dry and swollen. He cared about nothing. He thought the would like to die (p. 19)
