OBJECTIVE TEST ITEM

Use the following checklist to evaluate any objective test item. Should you mark any of the answers “no” it
means that the question can be bettered with regards to that aspect. A general comments box is provided
below for you to add an extra critique.

Broad objectives (answer for all types of questions)
Was an appropriate question type used for this question?
Is there only one (or one best) answer?
Is the question phrased without absolutes?
Is the language clear and simple?
Is the grammar and spelling correct?
Is the item stated in the positive?
Does the item represent a fact (not an opinion)?

Answer only the appropriate section for the type of question you are evaluating
A. True-false questions
Does the question contain only one statement?
Is the question stated without verbatim phrases from readings?

B. Multiple choice questions


Is the question free of grammatical cues towards the answer?
Is the options listed in alphabetical or chronological order?
Does the key contain more text than the distracters?

C. Matching questions
Are the question instructions clearly provided?
Are the options and descriptions in the correct logical order?

D. Completion questions
Is the sentence coherent with the blanks left out?
Is the sentence formulated to be specific about what has to be added into the
blank?
