Megan Courtney Name: Indian Caste System Class/Subject: Ancient World History Objective: Students will be able to identify

y the caste system and be familiar with how it functions Students will understand role or religion, society, and history on both the ancient and modern caste system Content Standards: 18.B.4 Analyze various forms of institutions (e.g., educational, military, charitable, governmental). 16.B.5c (W) Analyze the relationship of an issue in world political history to the related aspects of world economic, social and environmental history. Material/Resources/Technology Powerpoint Cans or other container Notes sheets Game slips Teachers Goals: Students will relate with people within the caste system Students will let go of cultural understandings, and not judge people based on western perception Time: 50 min 5 min Start of class: As students walk in classroom, they will draw a position of the caste system from the first bucket. 10 min Introduction to the lesson: Students will respond to quick write question. Student response will be discussed at a later time. 25-30 min Lesson Instruction: 1. Teacher uses power point and note sheet to go through lesson. 2. At time of activity, teacher reminds students to check what position they are instructs where the different caste systems where they should stand. 3. Students will take turns dying and draw how their life went and whether they moved up, down, or stayed the same. 4. After a few rounds, class will come back together and have students answer a second quick write question. 5. Then the class as a whole discusses both quick writes. Were

Checks for understanding: Teacher will listen to responses to the quick write and activity to see if students understand the lesson. Closure: Teacher will show students photos of current caste system in Indian society and talk about how though parts of it is illegal, it is still socially enforced Self-Assessment: Teacher will reflect on how the lesson went
