Messersmith Subject- Science, Social Studies Title- Juice Caboose Materials- Taste testing samples Paper Writing Utensil Objective- By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify the four taste sensations and understand why taste is so important for making juice. 1) Engage: To engage the students I will begin by asking them their favorite types of juice, when they like to enjoy that juice, what makes it their favorite, what does the juice look and smell like and how it is sold (packaging, bottle size, labels). After asking these questions, I will tell the students that they are going to take part in a process that is crucial to the development of juice production and distribution. 2) Explore: I will explain to the students that we will be tasting juice samples and identify the types of sensations we taste. I will distribute four samples to the students and have them divide a piece of paper into four sections, labeling each section with the title, Sample #1, Sample #2, Sample #3, and Sample #4. After tasting each sample, the students will write down in the appropriate section a list of words that describes the taste of the sample. The will repeat this procedure for the next three samples. 3) Explain: I will explain to the students that all tastes can be classified as bitter, sweet, sour or salty. I will then call on students to observe their findings about the four samples and see what taste they classified with each sample. 4) Elaboration: I will inform the students that they are going to rotate through the four stations to determine the taste each station represents, either bitter, sweet, salty or sour. I will advise the students to only take one sample and after they are finished, to discard the cup into the garbage. After sampling the products, I will have the students write down what taste they experienced at each station and the reason why they chose that particular taste. 5) Evaluation: I will check the students work to determine whether or not they were able to correctly establish each stations specific taste. I will also ask students if they can explain the relationship between knowing about tastes and making juice.
