oncepts and Principles

Unani medicine is based on Greece
philosophy.
ntroduced in ndia in 1351 AD by Arabs.
Basic Principles Body is made up of 4
basic elements i.e. Earth, Air, Water, Fire
Basic elements have different
Temperament i.e. old, Hot, Wet, Dry.

After mixing and interaction of four
elements a new compound having new
temperament comes into existence i.e. Hot
Wet, Hot Dry, old Wet, old Dry

Body organs got nourishment through 4
Humours i.e. Blood, Phlegm, Yellow Bile,
Black Bile
The humours also assigned temperament
as blood is hot and wet, phlegm is cold
and wet, yellow bile is hot and dry and
black bile is cold and dry.
Equilibrium in the humours is health.

Unani medicine belives in promotion of
health, prevention of diseases and cure.
Health is based on 6 essentials
Atmospheric air, Drinks and food,
Sleep and wakefulness,
Excretion and retention,
Physical activity and rest,
Mental activity and rest.

Diagnosis
With the help of pulse (Nabz).
Physical examination of urine and stool.
Use of medern gadgets.

Regimenal Therapy
Some drugless regimens are advised i.e.
Exercise, massage, hammam,
douches, regimen of geriatrics

Dietotherapy
Different diets are recommended for the
patients of different diseases.

Pharmaco-therapy
Used to correct cause of disease. Disease
may be due to -
i) Environmental factors
ii) Abnormal humours either due to internal
causes or external causes which may be
pathogenic micro-organism.
The drugs are mostly plant origin, few
animal and mineral origin.

Single drugs (crude) or compound drugs
(formulations of single drugs) are used.
ompound drugs are either classical,
which are in use for thousands years and
Patent/Proprietary compound drugs which
have been formulated by the individuals or
institutions as per their research and
experience.
