Ano ang Education Summit?

 Solusyon  “lumalalang” school system

 Hadlang sa global student competitiveness
 Graduates  ill-trained for the job market
 Agenda
 Student performance  a “zero-dropout” rate in schools
 Teachers’ competencies especially in Math, Science and
English
 “Mismatch” between graduates and the job skills that are
actually ‘in demand’
President: Sectors should shape up
 Education system trifocalized = in 1994
 DepEd
 CHED
 TESDA
 Executive Order No. 652 (Presidential Task
Force for Education)
 Teachers retrained = 24 units of English
 Children were prepared = at least a year in
preschool or day care before entering Grade 1
Teachers’ Retraining
 Priority = lowest 5 % of the total number of
schools nationwide (+ supplemental learning
materials for students)
 More manageable classroom size = 45 students
per classroom
Statistics

Criticisms
 Long-standing controversy
 Social, economic, political factors come to play
 Ambitious
 Alleviate poverty and elevate the country to a First
World status within the next 20 years
 VERY long term
 While we are too busy of what language to use
as a medium of instruction, we forgot to teach
our students how to think (Acuña 1994)
