The passive voice is used when we wish to stress the importance of the action or the object rather than the doer.

Active: Didnt they tell you to come here at six oclock? Passive: Werent you told to come here at six oclock?
Active: I am sure someone can repair this machine. Passive: I am sure this machine can be repaired.

2. The passive voice is used when the agent (or doer) is unknown or not clear.

Active: Have they repaired the bridge? Passive: Has the bridge been repaired? Active : Someone stole the pen on my table. Passive: The pen on my table was stolen.

3. The agent is mentioned in the passive voice to complete the sense of the sentence.

Active: John Hill directed this film. Passive: This film was directed by John Hill. Active: A car had run over him. Passive: He had been run over by a car.

4. When the verb is followed by two objects, the personal object becomes the subject of the sentence in the passive voice.

Active: Someone gave me a ticket to the concert. Passive: I was given a ticket to the concert. Active: People always praised him for his works of art. Passive: He was always praised for his works of art

5. If adverbial particles or adverbs appear in the active sentence, they have to be included in the passive sentence. Some adverbial particles and adverbs change positions when the sentence is in the passive form.

Active: Somebody locked the dog out last night. Passive: The dog was locked out last night. Active: She placed the baking tray carefully in the oven. Passive: The baking tray was carefully placed in the oven.

6. An infinitive with to is used with verbs like say, believe, claim, think,
consider, fear, hope, know, etc.

Active: People say that a dog is a mans best friend. Passive: A dog is said to be a mans best friend. Active: They feared that she had injured herself seriously in the accident. Passive: She was feared to have injured herself seriously in the accident.
