REQUIREMENTS FOR Energy EXPERIMENTS

TITLE AND PURPOSE Students must narrow their focus down to a specific question that they will be investigating in the project. For example: If I vary the length of the blades of a windmill, will it turn at different rates? Purpose: write 1-3 sentences describing what you want to find out: The purpose of this project is to find out if the length of the blades on a windmill affect the amount of energy produced. I want to know if longer blades turn faster than shorter blades. RESEARCH AND BIBLIOGRAPHY The purpose of the Research Paper is to provide information to help understand why the experiment turns out the way it does. It should include: The history of similar experiments or inventions. Definitions of all important words and concepts that describe the experiment. Answers to all the background research plan questions. Mathematical formulas, if any, that are needed to describe the results of the experiment. The Bibliography is a list of the sources that will be used to answer the research questions. Source Requirement: at least 3 sources. Please remind your students that GOOGLE IS NOT A REFERENCE. Students need to reference where they go to from their Google Search. HYPOTHESIS Students need to state a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a guess as to the outcome of the experiment. Put the hypothesis in the form of an If then statement If I __________ then I think_ Example: If the blades of the windmill are 10 centimeters long, then I think the windmill will spin the fastest. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE A detailed list of the materials that will be used to conduct the experiment and the detailed steps that will be followed while conducting the experiment. CONDUCTING THE EXPERIMENT There is ample time here to allow the students to do multiple runs of their experiments. Some experiments might require more time. Minimum Trials: 3 runs of experiment. If students are working with plants, they should have 3 plants for each variable tested RESULTS AND DATA ANALYSIS WITH GRAPHS, CHARTS AND DIAGRAMS Results listed in a chart. The analysis of the experimental data. A summary of the findings of the experiment including charts, graphs and diagrams.

CONCLUSIONS AND FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS Conclusion: An explanation of the results of the experiment. Example: My results support my hypothesis. I found that blades that are 10 centimeters long turn at the greatest speed. Blades shorter than 10 centimeters and blades longer than 10 centimeters turned the windmill slower OR My results do not support my hypothesis. I thought blades that were 10 centimeters long would be the best, but they were not. As you can see from my data chart blades that were 12 centimeters made the windmill spin faster. My research on this topic indicated that there is a definite length that is best for windmill blades, and any more or less does not increase energy production Further Considerations: Tell how you might take your experiment to the next step. Also include what variable you would change if you could do the experiment again. Example: If I could do this experiment again, the variable I would change would be the material I used for the blades in my windmill. I would keep them all the same size but use aluminum, wood, and paper and see if there is any difference in the material used and the rate at which they spin.
